Changes to September and October International Breaks for 2026 World Cup Cycle

After the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which saw Spain crowned champions, attention turns to the upcoming international match calendar. The first opportunity for national teams to start qualifying for the 2030 World Cup will come in a new, combined window.

Traditionally, international breaks were split between September and October. For 2026, these have been merged into one extended period starting September 21, 2026 and running through October 6, 2026. This 16-day stretch allows teams to play up to four matches during this single break.

Reason Behind Combining the September and October Windows

The 2026 World Cup expanded to include 48 teams and lasted six weeks throughout the summer, an increase from previous editions. To accommodate players' recovery time and their reintegration into club football after such a demanding tournament, FIFA consolidated the September and October breaks.

This change gives coaches a rare chance to spend a longer time with their squads, working more closely on tactics and team cohesion over a two-week camp instead of two separate one-week breaks.

November International Break Still Intact

Despite the merging of September and October, the usual international break in November remains unchanged. From November 9 to November 17, 2026, national teams will gather again to play up to two matches as part of the ongoing qualification process.

  • Next international break: September 21 - October 6, 2026
  • Number of matches possible: Up to 4 games during this window
  • Reason for change: Extended World Cup length requiring player rest and adjustment time
  • November break dates: November 9 - 17, 2026
  • November matches: Up to 2 games
