Carlo Ancelotti Supports Neymar’s World Cup Selection as Brazil Legend Retires
Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of the Brazil national team, has responded to Neymar's retirement from international football. He stood firm on his decision to include the veteran forward in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, despite concerns about Neymar’s fitness leading up to the tournament.
Neymar Ends a 16-Year International Career
The 34-year-old forward officially stepped away from Brazil’s national team following their round of 16 loss to Norway. Despite the early exit from the competition, Ancelotti insisted that Neymar deserved his place on the trip to North America.
Challenges with Fitness and Preparation
Ancelotti acknowledged that Neymar struggled physically during the tournament, especially due to a grade 2 calf strain that kept him out of Brazil’s first two group matches against Morocco and Haiti. Speaking to ESPN, Ancelotti said, “He didn’t contribute on a technical level as much as hoped because he couldn’t. But his attitude was very positive. I have a lot of affection for him, and I thanked him for his behavior. Including him in the 26-man squad was the right decision.”
Still, the coach admitted frustration about Neymar’s preparation before the World Cup. “The only thing that bothered me is that Neymar could have prepared better in the lead-up period. He could have been ready from game one rather than game four. That was disappointing,” Ancelotti added.
Looking Ahead to a New Generation
With Neymar retiring, Ancelotti is focused on rebuilding Brazil’s squad for the 2030 World Cup. This transition marks a shift away from the stars of the previous decade toward emerging talent.
“One generation ends and another has to come, and it must be better than the last one,” said Ancelotti, formerly of Real Madrid.
More Veterans Could Soon Follow Neymar
The coach also hinted that other experienced players might retire soon. When asked about Casemiro, Danilo, and Alex Sandro, Ancelotti gave an honest assessment of the aging roster.

“It’s a period coming to an end. We owe these players gratitude, and I have great affection for them,” Ancelotti said. “Some players will remain, like Marquinhos. For Alisson, we’ll see.”
