Barcelona Maintain Interest in Rashford Amid United's Dilemma

Barcelona have not walked away from Marcus Rashford. Far from it. The Spanish giants remain in regular contact with the forward’s representatives as they juggle their attacking rebuild and explore a move that could yet send the England international back to the Nou Camp from Manchester United, TEAMtalk understands.

Rashford is back at Old Trafford this summer, wearing United colours again for the first time in 18 months. Barcelona chose not to trigger their €30million (£26m/$35m) option to buy him permanently after his loan spell, despite a campaign in which he produced 28 goal contributions in all competitions.

The Catalan club had always leaned towards another loan, mindful that Rashford still had two years left on his United contract. United, though, drew a hard line: they would only entertain a permanent sale.

So Rashford has returned as United’s highest-paid player. Michael Carrick and his staff have brought him back into the first-team fold and, as previously reported, are open to using him this season. He is training, involved, and, for now, part of the plan.

But the story is not closed.

There is still a live possibility that Rashford leaves before the transfer window shuts, with Barcelona firmly in the frame. His camp has fielded interest from other clubs, yet the financial demands of any deal for the England forward mean only a handful of teams can realistically step up.

Barcelona are one of those. Sources describe a “remarkable” scenario in which a return to Catalonia remains on the table, even after the club initially passed on their purchase clause.

Barca’s attack in flux keeps door ajar

Since the end of last season, Barcelona’s need for fresh firepower has only grown. Rashford has gone back to England, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have both departed, and Roony Bardghji has suffered a season-ending injury.

They have responded by signing Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, but their work in the final third is not done. Lines of communication with Rashford’s representatives remain open as they map out the rest of their window.

Rashford would be happy to return to Catalunya. That part is straightforward. The problem lies in Manchester. It is unclear whether United would entertain another loan, even one that includes an obligation to buy. The club’s stance to this point has been clear: no more temporary exits.

The picture is further clouded by Barcelona’s drawn-out chase of Julian Alvarez. The Catalan side are still pushing for the Argentinian international, yet there is no sign of Atletico Madrid softening their position. Atletico have repeatedly stressed Alvarez is “not for sale” to Barcelona, and that stalemate is squeezing Barca’s options as they try to finalise their attack.

If that deadlock continues, Rashford’s name stays firmly in the conversation.

United’s internal debate

From United’s perspective, the calculation is more complex. Rashford has been reintegrated and, on paper, strengthens Carrick’s options. At the same time, the club are carrying one of the Premier League’s heaviest wage commitments.

Inside Old Trafford, there is ongoing debate about whether that is sustainable in the long term, especially if Barcelona – or another elite club – come forward with a proposal that ticks the financial boxes.

For now, Rashford is a Manchester United player. He trains at Carrington, he pulls on the shirt, and he is available for selection. But Barcelona have not closed the door, and neither, it seems, have United slammed it shut.
