Neuer Sits Out DFB Cup Final – World Cup Target Remains
Manuel Neuer has decided not to roll the dice. With a World Cup on the horizon and the German No. 1 shirt effectively waiting for him, the 40-year-old will miss the DFB Cup final rather than test a fragile calf once too often.
His recovery is on track, Sky reports, but a small risk remains. For a goalkeeper who has already lost chunks of this season to muscle-fibre tears in December, February and March, that risk is now one step too far.
The warning sign came last Saturday. Neuer started the final Bundesliga matchday against 1. FC Köln, a 5–1 win, but left the pitch as a precaution with calf problems. The diagnosis was not catastrophic, yet close enough to the cup final to force a hard conversation.
That conversation ended with Jonas Urbig.
The 22-year-old understudy will start in goal at the Olympiastadion, making his 20th appearance of the season in what is clearly the biggest game of his career so far. From backup to centre stage, with a major trophy and a packed stadium as the backdrop.
Sven Ulreich and Jannis Bärtl are also named in Vincent Kompany's squad, but it is Urbig who carries the gloves and the pressure.
The timing adds another twist. Just a day before the Köln match, Neuer had extended his expiring contract until 2027, underlining the club’s faith that he can still anchor both dressing room and back line for years to come. On Thursday, national coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed that faith at international level, listing Neuer in Germany’s squad for the North American World Cup.
There, the expectation is clear: if fit, he will reclaim the German No. 1 role.
Sporting director Max Eberl spelled out the calculation in Bild: “The World Cup isn't in jeopardy, but he can't play tomorrow. It's simply too soon after Saturday's injury. There's no point risking further damage by starting him in the cup final. We made this decision together, even if it was tough for Manu to miss the final.”
So Neuer steps aside for one night, trading the roar of a cup final for the longer view of a World Cup campaign. Urbig steps in, with a season’s worth of understudy work suddenly condensed into 90 minutes that could redefine his career.
On Wednesday, the DFB team gathers in Herzogenaurach to begin preparations for the tournament. Neuer is expected to be there, chasing one last World Cup, while the cup final offers a glimpse of what the future might look like when Germany’s long-time guardian finally hands over the keys.
