Celtic's Transfer for Haissem Hassan: A Financial Overview

Celtic’s move for Haissem Hassan looks a lot leaner on the balance sheet than many expected during a summer-long chase that came wrapped in talk of a £9 million outlay.

The Egypt international finally arrived from Real Oviedo this week, ending a drawn-out saga and adding a fresh attacking option to Brendan Rodgers’ squad. Early reports had hinted at a huge overall package, but figures emerging from Spain tell a more measured story.

According to La Voz de Asturias, Celtic have agreed an initial fee of around €5.5 million. The deal is heavily performance-based from there. Oviedo could collect up to a further €2 million in bonuses if Hassan hits a series of agreed targets, taking the potential total to roughly €7.5 million.

There is another key detail tucked into the small print. Oviedo have secured a 20 per cent sell-on clause, but only on any profit Celtic make on a future transfer, not on the full sale price. If Hassan is sold on for more than Celtic have paid in total, Oviedo take a slice of that uplift.

Even then, the Spanish club will not keep all of the Glasgow side’s initial payment. Villarreal, who sold Hassan to Oviedo for around €700,000 in 2024, are due 40 per cent of Oviedo’s profit. On a €5.5 million starting fee from Celtic, Oviedo’s profit sits at roughly €4.8 million before Villarreal take their share, which tallies with reports in Spain that Oviedo will ultimately bank in the region of €3.6 million at this stage.

For Celtic, the headline is clear: the guaranteed outlay looks significantly lower than the £9 million figure that hovered over the deal earlier in the window. The structure shifts the risk. Any extra payments only arrive if Hassan performs to a level that triggers the add-ons, and Oviedo’s sell-on clause only bites if his value climbs and Celtic cash in down the line.

The club have not confirmed any numbers publicly, so the figures remain unverified from Parkhead’s side. But the picture painted in Spain suggests Celtic have landed a player long linked with a hefty price tag for a far more modest up-front commitment.

Now the numbers are roughly in place. The next question is whether Hassan’s impact on the pitch can justify every last euro of the gamble.
