Deco’s Defensive Obsession

For weeks, the sporting director has been convinced of one thing: Barcelona need a top-level, left-footed centre-back. Not as a luxury. As a necessity.

According to SPORT, Deco has held this stance since the start of the summer, even as internal debate questioned whether the position really needed urgent attention. The financial situation has forced him to wait, to prioritise other areas, but the idea has never left his desk.

At the beginning of the window, that conviction led Barça to test the waters for Alessandro Bastoni. Inter’s defender fit the profile: left-footed, elite, comfortable high up the pitch. But the move stalled. There was no full sporting consensus, and his price tag was judged excessive. The file went back in the drawer.

Then Ronald Araujo left. And the debate ended.

With the Uruguayan gone, the centre-back issue has returned to the forefront. Barcelona are back in the market, this time with more urgency and a clearer sense of what they want.

Flick’s Different View

Hansi Flick does not see the world exactly as Deco does.

The German coach has never placed the search for a centre-back at the top of his list. For him, the spine of his defence is already solid enough to compete: Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin excite him, Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia bring experience, and academy defender Alvaro Cortes has caught the eye.

Flick’s priority is simple: a No. 9. He wants a centre-forward to finish the chances his team creates and to give structure to his attack.

Even so, there is an understanding at the club that an experienced defender, especially one who is left-footed, would add security, balance and depth. The kind of presence Inigo Martinez once provided. Someone who can step straight into a high defensive line and not blink.

That is the profile Deco is chasing.

Laporte, Lukeba and the Shortlist

Barcelona’s scouts have spent months combing through options who can make an immediate impact. One name has climbed to the top of the list: Aymeric Laporte.

His entourage indicated that he has an affordable release clause, and that hint was enough for Barça to dig deeper. On paper, he looks like a natural fit. Left-footed. Experienced. Comfortable defending high. And there is already a reference point: his partnership with Pau Cubarsi at the World Cup, where the pair delivered an outstanding performance together.

The idea is tempting. The reality is tougher.

Athletic insist there is no cut-price clause to trigger and have no intention of opening negotiations for his departure. That stance turns Laporte from an elegant solution into a complicated operation.

So Barcelona keep another option in play: Castello Lukeba.

The RB Leipzig centre-back has been under close observation from Barça’s scouting department all year. He is younger, more of a long-term bet, but ticks several boxes: strong distribution, serious physical presence, and the potential to grow into a leader at the back.

The problem here is not sporting. It is financial. Lukeba would require a major outlay, the sort of investment that is hard to justify before the striker situation is resolved.

The Last Big Move

For now, the club’s energy is locked on three names: a striker, Rodri and Joao Cancelo. The expectation inside Barcelona is that the operations for Rodri and Cancelo are close to being wrapped up.

Only then will Deco move his full attention to the defensive puzzle.

The plan is clear: once the attack is armed and the flanks are reinforced, Barcelona want to land one last significant signing at centre-back. A left-footed defender who can walk into Flick’s system and complete the squad’s structure.

It is the final market blow Deco dreams of delivering. Whether it ends up being Laporte, Lukeba, or another late-window opportunity will say a lot about how ambitious Barça can really be in this new era.
