Xavi Retains Ruud van Nistelrooy in Netherlands Coaching Team
Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue as part of the Netherlands coaching team under newly appointed head coach Xavi Hernandez. The former Dutch striker's role ensures continuity within the squad as the KNVB finalizes the staff for a fresh chapter in Dutch football.
Van Nistelrooy and Lodewijks Remain on Staff
Dutch source Algemeen Dagblad reports that Van Nistelrooy impressed during the 2026 World Cup, prompting the federation to retain him. Alongside him, goalkeeping coach Patrick Lodewijks, who has served since early 2023, will also stay, forming the domestic backbone of Xavi’s backroom team.
Xavi Embraces Dutch Football Heritage
The former Barcelona boss shared his pride in leading the Oranje, highlighting his connection to the Total Football philosophy shaped by legends like Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels.
"I find it an enormous honour to become the national coach of the Dutch team. As someone educated at the FC Barcelona academy, with influences from Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, I feel a special connection with Dutch football," Xavi said. "You could say I am a bit of a son of Dutch football. Other great managers like Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard have also influenced me greatly. Our main aim is to win, but in a way that reflects those characteristics and is enjoyable to watch. We have the potential and a strong base to build on."
Xavi’s New Era for Oranje
At 46 years old, Xavi has signed a contract through 2030, covering Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup. He replaces Ronald Koeman, who left after the Netherlands exited the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32 against Morocco. Xavi becomes the 21st foreign manager in Dutch history and the first since Ernst Happel in the late 1970s.
