Liverpool have spent years raiding rival academies for the brightest young talent in Britain. Now one of their fiercest domestic rivals is on the verge of returning the favour.
From Harvey Elliott to Ben Gannon-Doak, Trey Nyoni to Rio Ngumoha, the Anfield pathway has become a magnet for gifted teenagers from across the UK. Liverpool’s recruitment team built a reputation for spotting promise early and persuading families that Merseyside was the place to turn potential into a first-team career.
This time, though, they are the ones bracing for a loss.
Arsenal close in on Liverpool striker
According to The Athletic, Arsenal have reached an agreement with Liverpool academy striker Vincent Joseph over a move to north London, with the clubs now locked in talks over a compensation fee for the 16-year-old.
Both sides are trying to settle on a figure. If they cannot, a tribunal will step in and set the amount owed to Liverpool, as required when a player under 24 moves before signing their first professional deal, or when existing professional terms expire.
Joseph did not sign scholarship terms with Liverpool this summer after his schoolboy registration ran out, opening the door for Arsenal to make their move.
A prolific record at youth level
Losing him will sting at Kirkby. Joseph’s numbers at youth level suggest a striker with serious upside.
He scored three goals in just two appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season, a sharp impact in limited minutes. For England under-16s, he has eight goals in nine caps, including a hat-trick against the Netherlands at that age group last December, as recorded by Transfermarkt.
Those are the sort of returns that turn heads in recruitment departments. Arsenal have clearly taken note.
Liverpool, for their part, have been busy tying down other academy prospects on professional terms, with the likes of Lucas Clarke earning early deals. With Joseph, though, they have been unable to reach an agreement, and Arsenal are now positioned to capitalise.
Tables turned in the talent race
There is an added twist of symmetry here. Liverpool recently swooped for Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea’s academy shortly after his 16th birthday, with a tribunal expected to decide that fee. It was the kind of opportunistic move big clubs have grown used to making.
Now Arsenal are set to do something very similar to Liverpool with Joseph.
For Liverpool supporters and academy staff, watching a highly rated teenager swap Merseyside for a direct Premier League rival will feel like a gut punch. For Arsenal, it looks like another smart play in a market where the margins at the top are getting tighter every year.
If Joseph’s development continues on its current trajectory, this quiet academy deal could end up being talked about far more loudly in seasons to come.
