Jose Mourinho Targets Marc Cucurella for Real Madrid's Left-Back Position

Jose Mourinho has not yet taken his seat in the Real Madrid dugout, but the work has already started. Before a ball is kicked, the Portuguese coach is dissecting his new squad, and one position keeps drawing his eye: left-back.

According to journalist Ruben Canizares, Mourinho has zeroed in on Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella as a potential solution, with the Spaniard’s future at Stamford Bridge increasingly up in the air ahead of the summer window.

Cucurella open to move

Cucurella, whose time at Chelsea has been uneven and often turbulent, is believed to be open to a fresh start. Those close to the player consider a transfer feasible in the €45–50 million range, and see anything significantly above that as unrealistic.

That stance sets a clear framework for negotiations. Any club stepping forward knows the ballpark. Go much higher, and Cucurella’s camp will consider the valuation excessive.

Barcelona lurking

The 25-year-old’s name has resurfaced on the shortlists of several major clubs in recent weeks. Real Madrid are one of them, tracking developments closely even if they have not yet pulled the trigger on a formal bid.

Barcelona are also keeping tabs on their former academy product. As so often in recent windows, though, their room for manoeuvre depends heavily on internal sales and the limits of their finances. Interest is there; freedom to act is another matter.

Mourinho’s left-back dilemma

On paper, Real Madrid are not short of options at left-back. The depth chart already carries three players who can operate there. Mourinho, though, is rarely satisfied with “on paper”.

Reports indicate he remains unconvinced by Alvaro Carreras, who arrived last summer with high expectations but has yet to fully lock down the role in the eyes of the incoming coach. Carreras is not being pushed out of the squad, but Mourinho clearly sees scope for an upgrade or at least stronger competition.

That is where Cucurella fits. Premier League experience, tactical versatility, and a combative edge make him an attractive profile for a manager who prizes intensity and reliability in defensive wide areas.

The cost of an adjustment

The interest, however, does not make the deal straightforward. For Madrid to bring in another left-back, someone will almost certainly have to make way. The club cannot stockpile options in one position while other areas of the squad demand investment.

So the question in the Bernabéu offices is simple, and ruthless. Does shoring up the left side of defence justify a €45–50 million outlay when there are other lines to reinforce?

Mourinho’s answer, judging by his focus on Cucurella, seems clear enough. Now it is up to Real Madrid to decide whether to follow his lead and reshape the flank before he even walks through the door.
