Barcelona Targets Leipzig’s Lukeba in Centre-Back Search

Barcelona’s search for a new centre-back has dragged on all summer. Now, at last, one name is beginning to move from background noise to genuine target: Castello Lukeba.

The Catalan club have been linked in recent weeks with Aymeric Laporte, Alessandro Bastoni, Lukeba and Cristian Romero, but none of those pursuits has truly taken off. The shortlist looked impressive. The progress did not.

That picture has shifted. According to SPORT, Barcelona have opened talks with RB Leipzig to ask about Lukeba’s situation and, crucially, his price. The Frenchman, a left-footed central defender, fits a profile the club have been chasing for years.

Deco and Hansi Flick are both strong admirers. Lukeba has sat near the top of their defensive wish list for a long time and is regarded inside the club as one of the standout young centre-backs in Europe.

He is already on the radar of several Premier League sides. Offers are on the table, but he has so far stayed put in the Bundesliga. The chance to move to Barcelona, though, is said to appeal to him, and he is prepared to make the leap if the clubs can strike a deal.

Lukeba’s current market value is around €30 million. Barcelona have called Leipzig to get a clearer idea of what the German club would demand to let him go.

Araujo gone, Kounde in the balance

The need is obvious. Ronald Araujo’s departure to Liverpool has left a hole at the heart of Barcelona’s defence and stripped Flick of one of his most reliable pillars. Centre-back is no longer just a medium-term concern; it is a priority.

What happens next with Jules Kounde will shape the entire operation. The Frenchman has offers and his exit is not off the table. If he goes, Barcelona will likely be forced into a more ambitious, and more expensive, signing at the back.

That decision will dictate how far they push for Lukeba. The club’s margin for error is slim, and Flick has already made it clear he is not convinced by some of the other names on the market, including Bastoni and Romero.

In that context, Lukeba stands out. Alongside Laporte, he looks like Barcelona’s most realistic route to rebuilding a defence that has already lost one cornerstone and may yet lose another.
