Manchester United Back Wilcox for £55m Lewis Hall Pursuit
Manchester United’s summer rebuild has taken a clear turn down the left flank, with director of football Jason Wilcox reportedly giving the green light to push hard for Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall.
United, back in the Champions League and under pressure to act like it, are braced for a hectic window. The club reshaped their attack and solved the goalkeeping conundrum last summer. This time the plan is to rip up and rework the midfield, with as many as three new faces targeted in the centre of the pitch.
But the recruitment drive will not stop there.
Hall lined up to challenge Shaw
Wilcox is said to be driving an aggressive move for Hall, identified as a priority target to add serious competition for Luke Shaw at left-back. Shaw has rediscovered his form this season and remains the first choice, yet United know the pattern by now: injuries, fatigue, and a calendar clogged with fixtures across four competitions.
They cannot gamble on one option. Not anymore.
Hall, valued at around £55 million, has emerged as one of the most coveted young full-backs in the Premier League. Reports last week revealed that United face strong competition from Bayern Munich for his signature, with the German champions tracking the 19-year-old closely.
The pressure around the deal has only intensified. According to fresh claims, Wilcox has now formally sanctioned a push for Hall and is urging the club to explore the transfer seriously. The belief is that Hall is open to leaving Newcastle after their failure to qualify for the Champions League, a key factor that has shifted the landscape around his future.
Finances, priorities – and an open door
There is still a hard question hanging over Old Trafford: money. Midfield remains the main area of investment, and there are doubts over whether United can stretch to Hall’s fee on top of multiple signings in the middle of the park.
Yet the timing of any move for Hall could work in United’s favour. The left-back has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, freeing United to hold talks both before and during the tournament without the usual international distractions.
Tuchel’s decision has raised eyebrows across the game. Hall’s club form has been electric, his influence growing with each passing week, and his omission has only fuelled the debate around England’s options on the left side of defence.
Richards backs Hall over Shaw for England
Micah Richards has nailed his colours firmly to Hall’s mast. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, the former England defender made his stance clear.
“While we’re just on Newcastle, Lewis Hall has to start at left-back for England,” Richards said. “I think he will. He’s absolutely amazing. To go from midfield to left-back, his spatial awareness, his timing of his challenges, he’s good on the ball, he’s got a good delivery, he’s got everything.
“His performances over the last two months have been outstanding. He’s by far the best in terms [of left-back options]. Luke Shaw’s done well since United have been doing well.”
That verdict underlines the scale of United’s ambition. They are not simply looking for cover; they are chasing a player many now see as England’s standout left-back option on form.
If Wilcox gets his way and the finances fall into place, United could walk into next season with Shaw and Hall battling for the same shirt. For a club trying to re-establish itself at the sharp end of Europe, that is exactly the kind of internal fight they have lacked.
Now the question is simple: can United turn Wilcox’s green light into a deal before Bayern – or anyone else – beats them to it?
