Jeff Bezos Consortium Acquires Major Stake in Liverpool

Liverpool have taken a significant step into a new financial era after a consortium featuring Amazon founder Jeff Bezos acquired close to 40% of the club from Fenway Sports Group (FSG), with an option in place to seize control within the next year.

The investment, made through 1892 Holdings, had initially been reported as roughly a one-third stake. The figure is in fact about 38%, as first revealed by The Athletic. It is a strategic minority share for now, but the agreement includes an option for the group to buy a controlling stake in the next 12 months. Crucially, that option exists without any binding obligation to complete a full takeover.

FSG confirmed the deal on Friday, announcing it had entered into a “definitive agreement” for a “strategic minority investment” from 1892 Holdings. The name is no accident: a nod to Liverpool’s founding year and a clear signal that this is no casual play.

At the head of the consortium is British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, a millionaire with long-standing experience in English football boardrooms. Alongside him stand Bezos and billionaire Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, adding heavyweight global clout to the project.

Bhatia is set to become Liverpool’s vice-chairman and will join an expanded club board, subject to regulatory approval. His arrival marks a swift return to the game after nearly two decades at Queens Park Rangers, where he served as director and co-owner for 18 years before giving up his stake last month.

The son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, Bhatia now steps into one of the most scrutinised roles in world football. With a sizeable stake secured, an option for full control on the table, and some of the world’s richest figures behind him, the next 12 months at Anfield will be watched like few others in the modern era.
