Arsenal Enter Race for Enzo Fernandez Amidst City and Madrid Interest
Arsenal have stepped into heavyweight company in the chase for Enzo Fernandez, testing Chelsea’s resolve and inserting themselves into a battle that already features Manchester City and Real Madrid.
They are not leading it. Not yet. And, crucially, Enzo is not even Mikel Arteta’s first choice.
Arsenal join the Enzo race – with a twist
Chelsea broke the British transfer record in February 2023 to land Fernandez from Benfica for £107million. It felt extravagant at the time; since then, Moises Caicedo, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak have pushed that fee down the all‑time list.
What has not diminished is Fernandez’s importance at Stamford Bridge.
After a bumpy start in England, the Argentine grew into one of Chelsea’s central pillars last season. While the club stumbled to a dismal 10th-place finish in the Premier League and lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City, Fernandez quietly compiled a season that underlined his class: 15 goals and seven assists in 54 appearances.
He shone while the team sagged.
That contrast now shapes his future. Fernandez wants out this summer. He does not want to wait through another transitional year while Chelsea try to claw their way back into the Premier League and Champions League elite. The departure of Enzo Maresca, with whom he enjoyed a strong relationship, only deepened his frustration.
According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have “joined the race” for the 25-year-old. New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, though, has no intention of letting him go without a fight. Alonso views Fernandez as a cornerstone for his rebuild, but the player has already instructed his agent to speak to interested clubs.
The door is not wide open. It is, however, unlocked.
Arteta’s real priority: Sandro Tonali
Arsenal are watching closely and are prepared to test Chelsea’s stance if the situation moves in their favour. A “shock raid” on a London rival is on the table.
But the same report makes one thing clear: Arteta’s preferred midfield signing is Sandro Tonali.
The Gunners opened lines of communication with Tonali’s representatives in January and have not backed away since. The Italian is understood to be keen on leaving Newcastle United, with both Arsenal and Manchester United tracking him. Any deal will be expensive – Tonali is expected to cost around €100m (£87m).
So Arsenal’s midfield plan has layers. Tonali sits at the top of the list. Fernandez is an opportunity they are ready to exploit if the market tilts their way.
Madrid calling, City lurking
For now, though, the smart money points towards Spain or the blue half of Manchester.
Reports in Spain on Thursday suggested Fernandez would prefer a move to Real Madrid over Manchester City. During the March international break, he fuelled that narrative by admitting he would like to live in Madrid, even likening the city to Buenos Aires.
Inside the Bernabeu, there is rare alignment. Jose Mourinho and club president Florentino Perez agree that Madrid need to bring in an elite midfielder. With City refusing to entertain serious offers for Rodri, attention in the Spanish capital is drifting towards Fernandez.
Chelsea, for their part, are not in the mood for a fire sale. They want to avoid a major financial loss and have set an asking price of €120m (£104m), just below what they originally paid Benfica. Anyone wanting Fernandez will have to pay close to full freight.
City’s hierarchy of targets
Manchester City’s interest in Fernandez is real but not yet decisive. On Wednesday, Fabrizio Romano underlined that Maresca “loves” Fernandez, yet he also cooled talk that City are already in concrete negotiations.
Inside the Etihad recruitment plan, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson currently sits at the top of their midfield shortlist. If City land Anderson, Fernandez may remain a luxury rather than a necessity. If they miss out, the equation changes. Fernandez then moves from admired to attainable.
A summer defined by one decision
So the picture is this:
- Chelsea want to keep Enzo Fernandez and have priced him like a centrepiece.
- Fernandez wants a club ready to compete now, not in theory.
- Real Madrid tempt him most.
- Manchester City hover, calculating.
- Arsenal, drawn into the contest, still reserve their biggest push for Sandro Tonali.
For Arsenal, the question is sharp. Do they stay disciplined and chase their priority, or pounce if Fernandez slips from Chelsea’s grasp and Madrid hesitate?
One midfielder will define someone’s summer. The only certainty is that Enzo Fernandez will not be short of doors to walk through if he chooses to leave Stamford Bridge.
