Manchester United vs Leeds United: Pre-Season Clash in Dublin
Manchester United step up their pre-season preparations in Dublin tonight, taking on old rivals Leeds United at Croke Park in their penultimate friendly before the Premier League curtain-raiser.
With only two games left before the trip to Hull City on August 22, Michael Carrick is expected to lean heavily on his senior core, squeezing in valuable minutes as he sharpens his first-team for competitive action.
Carrick weighs defensive tweaks
In goal, Senne Lammens is set for his first start of the summer after illness ruled him out of the clash with Paris Saint-Germain. His recovery offers Carrick a timely chance to assess the Belgian properly before the season starts.
At right-back, Noussair Mazraoui began against PSG, but this time Diogo Dalot is in line for a recall as Carrick looks to spread the workload. Ayden Heaven endured a difficult afternoon on Saturday, and that could open the door for Leny Yoro to step in alongside Harry Maguire at centre-back.
It would be a significant test for Yoro, but a logical one. Leeds will press, they will run, and they will ask questions of any new partnership.
Midfield puzzle after Mount scare
The midfield axis of Andrey Santos and Mason Mount has been one of the brighter features of United’s summer. The pair have knitted together well, offering balance in and out of possession.
But Mount’s early withdrawal in Gothenburg has complicated things. He and Carrick both stressed the change was only precautionary, yet with the season so close, there is little sense in gambling. Youri Tielemans is waiting for his first start of the summer and this could be the night he joins Santos from the off.
Ahead of them, captain Bruno Fernandes is expected to return to the No.10 role after getting his first minutes of pre-season at the weekend. His inclusion would push youngster Shea Lacey out of the starting XI, though United still plan to use the teenager more regularly with the first team in the coming months.
Rashford back in the fold, but likely from bench
Marcus Rashford has rejoined the squad in Dublin, his situation one of the lingering storylines of United’s summer. His long-term future is still unclear, but on the training pitch he has been reintegrated into the group.
Even so, a starting place tonight looks unlikely. The same applies to Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, who have only just returned from World Cup duty and are being eased back into action.
On the right, Amad’s strong display on Saturday has put him in pole position to keep his place. He carried a threat and worked tirelessly, exactly the sort of form that is hard to ignore at this stage of pre-season.
On the left, Patrick Dorgu may be given another opportunity as he continues to learn the role. If Matheus Cunha has fully shaken off the illness that sidelined him at the weekend, he will be pushing hard to start there instead, giving Carrick a genuine selection call to make.
Mbeumo leads the line as Sesko waits
Up front, Carrick’s ideal scenario is obvious: Benjamin Sesko leading the line, fully fit and firing. The reality is different. Sesko has not played since the win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last season, and with no recent minutes in his legs, caution will likely prevail.
That leaves Bryan Mbeumo as the natural choice through the middle. He has been one of United’s standout performers in pre-season, sharp, confident and productive. At this stage, picking him as the central striker feels inevitable until Sesko is ready to shoulder the load again.
Leeds in Dublin, Premier League kick-off on the horizon, and a manager trying to lock in his strongest XI. Tonight won’t decide United’s season, but it will say plenty about who Carrick truly trusts when the real games begin.
