Roony Bardghji Suffers Torn ACL: Impact on Barcelona Career
Barcelona winger Roony Bardghji has suffered a devastating torn ACL in his right knee, a brutal blow that has wrecked both his season and his planned summer exit from the club.
The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old Swede damaged the ligament during training on Monday. Tests have since revealed the worst: he needs surgery in the coming days and faces a long spell out, with his future suddenly frozen just weeks before the transfer window shuts on September 1.
From transfer talks to treatment table
The timing could hardly be crueller. Bardghji had been gearing up for a move away from Barcelona after frank talks with coach Hansi Flick. According to ESPN, Flick told the forward that first‑team minutes would be extremely hard to find in the upcoming campaign and advised him to look for a new club.
That conversation set everything in motion. Barcelona began listening to interest from across Europe, including enquiries from Premier League sides, and negotiations were expected to intensify as the deadline approached. Bardghji, 20 years old and ambitious, was preparing for a fresh start.
The club even tried to shield him from exactly this scenario. To avoid any injury risk ahead of a possible transfer, he was deliberately left out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. He didn’t play a minute.
The injury still came. Not in a match, but on the training pitch.
A cruel repeat
This is not Bardghji’s first nightmare with his right knee. It is his second torn ACL on the same side, after suffering the identical injury while playing for Copenhagen in 2024. For a young winger whose game leans heavily on sharp changes of direction and acceleration, that history makes the setback even more worrying.
Barcelona signed him from Copenhagen last summer for around €2 million, a low‑risk move for a high‑upside talent. In his debut season in Spain, he made 28 appearances across all competitions and scored two goals. Most of those minutes came from the bench, a glimpse rather than a full showcase of what he might offer.
This summer, his path to the starting XI narrowed even further. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi added serious competition in the wide areas, pushing Bardghji down the pecking order just as he was trying to climb it.
Window slammed shut
Now the transfer window has effectively closed for him, even if the calendar says otherwise. With surgery looming and a lengthy rehabilitation ahead, any chance of a move before September 1 has vanished. No club will take on a long-term injury without clarity on his recovery, and Barcelona know they will be overseeing that process themselves.
The plan has flipped: instead of packing his bags, Bardghji will spend the season in Barcelona’s treatment rooms and gyms, working his way back from a second major knee injury before his 21st birthday.
His focus turns from minutes and moves to something more basic and far more brutal in elite sport: can he come back from another ACL tear and still become the player he was meant to be?
