Xabi Alonso Rules Out Moises Caicedo for Chelsea vs Leeds

Xabi Alonso has ruled Moises Caicedo out of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds on Tuesday night, insisting he will not gamble again with the midfielder’s fitness.

Caicedo, who missed the opening two league games against Fulham and Luton, made his comeback as a substitute in the 4-3 win over Brighton. His return lasted just 14 minutes. The Ecuador captain was forced off with injury, a sharp setback just as he appeared to be finding his rhythm.

He sat out Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, and Alonso did not hide his regret over how quickly Chelsea had thrown him back into action.

After the game at the Emirates, Alonso admitted he and the club may have rushed Caicedo back too soon against Brighton and vowed not to repeat “the same mistake again”.

Press Conference Update

At his press conference on Tuesday afternoon, the Chelsea head coach stuck to that line. Asked directly if Caicedo was fit to face Leeds, the answer was blunt.

“No. Not yet. Still not ready to go. Not the moment to take a too-early risk. We go game by game with them. It’s too early,” Alonso said.

The question then moved on to Hull and the next league fixture.

Could Caicedo be involved there?

“Potentially, yes,” Alonso replied. “But we need to wait and probably Thursday or Friday we will know more.”

Chelsea’s midfield options have already been stretched, and Alonso confirmed there will be more changes for the Leeds tie. Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha will both miss the match, adding to the absentees.

There was at least some positive news. Levi Colwill is available again, a timely boost for a side still searching for defensive stability. Marco Palestra, though, remains sidelined.

Alonso was quick to underline how much he rates the young attacker.

“Especially for (Palestra). He came with huge energy, huge desire to enjoy his game in the PL,” he said. “He had a very good pre-season. Right in the days before Fulham, he picked up an injury. We will need him, for sure. He will add a lot of good potential for the team.”

Leeds, by contrast, arrive at Stamford Bridge with far fewer concerns. They travel with what is close to a clean bill of health, though Daniel James will face a late fitness test as he battles lingering back and hamstring issues.

Chelsea must now navigate a high-intensity cup tie without their record midfielder, knowing another misstep in his recovery could cost them far more than just one night under the lights.
