Wrexham Struggles for Form After 1-1 Draw with Burnley

Phil Parkinson admitted Wrexham are still some way from their best after a stuttering 1-1 draw with Burnley at the Racecourse.

The Red Dragons had to come from behind, Jacques Ekomie’s second-half header salvaging a point against a side who kicked off the night bottom of the Championship. It kept Wrexham’s unbeaten run at three matches, but the wait for a first home win of the season goes on.

They arrived with confidence, backed by a 3-0 dismantling of Millwall and a hard-fought 0-0 at Swansea, where their defensive organisation had been the platform. This time, Parkinson saw a different picture.

“There are things we can do better,” the Wrexham boss said, cutting straight to the chase.

Without the ball, Wrexham never quite looked comfortable. Burnley tweaked their shape and movement, and Parkinson felt his side were too slow to react and too soft in their press.

“Without the ball, tactically we didn't get it quite right. They changed a couple of things and we were also a bit passive in terms of the way we pressed as well,” he admitted.

That combination opened pockets Burnley were only too happy to play into. It was a sharp contrast to the control Wrexham had exerted in their previous two outings.

“If you look at the Swansea and Millwall games we restricted two teams to hardly a shot on goal,” Parkinson said. “Against Burnley there was just a bit too much space in areas and we need to look at that.”

Too often, Wrexham’s back line sagged, inviting pressure instead of squeezing it. The manager’s diagnosis was blunt: his team dropped too deep, too often.

“We got caught 10 to 15 yards too deep at times,” he said. “At half-time we rectified that and the pressing was loads better.”

The adjustment brought more bite and, eventually, Ekomie’s equaliser. The point keeps Wrexham ticking over, but Parkinson’s words made it clear: for a club with promotion ambitions and a packed Racecourse demanding more, “unbeaten” will not be enough for long.
