William Saliba Returns to Arsenal's Champions League Squad

Arsenal have received a major lift before a ball has even been kicked in Europe – William Saliba is back on the Champions League squad list.

The French centre-back, who hasn’t played this season after a back problem flared up again, has been named in Mikel Arteta’s 22-man group for the league phase. For a club still carrying the scars of last May’s final defeat, his inclusion feels significant.

Now, at least, there is a doorway. Being named in the European squad doesn’t guarantee an immediate comeback, but it underlines Arsenal’s belief that Saliba will play a part in this campaign. For supporters who haven’t seen him in action at all this term, that alone changes the mood.

Arsenal have not waited around while their defensive lynchpin recovers.
