When Will William Saliba Return? Arsenal Defender's Recovery Timeline After Back Surgery
After claiming the Premier League crown last season, Arsenal aim higher for the 2026/27 season. Yet, injuries are a hurdle as they prepare for the upcoming months. One key concern is the status of their standout centre-back, William Saliba, who was instrumental in their defense.
What Happened to Saliba?
Saliba worsened a pre-existing back issue while representing France in the World Cup semifinal against Spain. Early in that match, he needed treatment on the field, and observers noted him mouthing "my back is gone". Despite discomfort, he had been playing through this injury during the final stages of the club season, including the run to the Champions League final.
The exact nature of the injury remains unclear—it might be anything from a fracture or slipped disc to nerve complications. Before the World Cup, Saliba admitted to dealing with "minor niggles" but pushed on due to the importance of the Champions League, Premier League, and the rare World Cup event.
"I've been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League. The World Cup comes around only once every four years, so you've got to grit your teeth. I'm not at 100%, but there are plenty of players who aren't at 100% either. You can't make excuses," said Saliba.
When Could He Be Back?
No official return date has been set for Saliba as he recovers from his back surgery. Reports from July suggested a possible five-month absence if surgery proceeded, but since he chose surgery, there's hope for a quicker comeback. Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed Saliba would miss games at least until the September international break, making an October return the earliest possibility. The timeframe could stretch longer depending on recovery progress.
How Will Arsenal Cope Without Saliba?
As of mid-August, Arsenal have not sought new defenders to fill Saliba’s spot. Instead, Arteta plans to rely on current backup centre-backs Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera. Both earned valuable minutes last season and showed promise.
Mosquera featured alongside Hincapie during the Community Shield win over Manchester City on August 16, starting on the right side of central defense. Given his right-sided preference, Mosquera seems favored to continue there, while Hincapie covers the left side.
