Juventus Sign Jhon Lucumí as Defensive Cornerstone

Juventus have their new defensive cornerstone – and they paid decisively to get him.

The club have wrapped up a deal for Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumí, agreeing a fee of €18 million plus a possible €2m in bonuses. The Colombian has signed a four-year contract in Turin worth €3m net per season, a clear sign that this is not a depth signing, but a long-term pillar for the Bianconeri back line.

Crucially, Lucumí wanted this move. Despite interest from other clubs, he pushed for Juventus, making it clear where he saw the next step of his career. The club responded in kind, announcing his arrival with a flourish on their official channels and framing him as a ready-made solution rather than a project: a defender “at the peak of his powers” and prepared to contribute immediately heading into the 2026/27 campaign.

This has been a steady rise, not an overnight story. Lucumí broke through at Deportivo Cali at just 17, then crossed the Atlantic to join Genk in 2018. In Belgium he grew into one of the league’s standout defenders, sharpening the positional sense and composure on the ball that caught the eye of Serie A scouts.

Bologna moved for him in the summer of 2022. Over four seasons at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, he became non-negotiable on the team sheet. One hundred and fifty-two appearances in all competitions tell their own story: reliability, availability, and trust from successive coaches. He even carried that form onto the Champions League stage with the Rossoblù, scoring one of his two goals for the club in Europe and anchoring a back line that punched above its weight.

Now comes the real test in Turin. With the deal completed, Lucumí will immediately slot into tactical sessions with his new teammates, tasked with learning the nuances of a defence that is being reshaped around him. Juventus are not easing him in gently either.

The fixture list offers a clear marker: an away trip to Frosinone on Sunday, August 23, to open the 2026-27 Serie A season.

All signs point to that match being Lucumí’s competitive debut in black and white, the moment he steps out to marshal a new-look Bianconeri defence and prove that this investment, and his own firm choice of destination, can drag Juventus back towards the heights they expect.
