Three Players Who Could Step Up for USMNT in Balogun’s Absence Against Belgium

The United States men’s national team confronts a major challenge in the World Cup round of 16, having secured their spot with a commanding performance but now missing their leading goal threat. Folarin Balogun, who has netted three of the team’s 10 goals in this tournament, will not play due to suspension after a red card in the previous round.

The USMNT's history at the World Cup includes just one advancement beyond the round of 16, reaching the quarterfinals 24 years ago. That achievement came after defeating Mexico but ended with a loss to Germany. Their best overall finish was in 1930 when they reached the semifinals in a much smaller tournament. This year, hopes are high for a historic run on home soil, but finding a replacement for Balogun is critical.

Ricardo Pepi: The Most Likely Successor

Ricardo Pepi is the obvious choice to fill Balogun’s role. The 23-year-old forward appeared briefly as a substitute in the last match and has experience from his second World Cup. Known for his scoring ability, Pepi’s defensive effort has sometimes been questioned, which affected his starting chances under coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Pepi’s style differs from Balogun’s more versatile approach, focusing heavily on attacking. In the 2026-27 season, Pepi scored 19 goals and added two assists across league and Champions League matches for PSV Eindhoven, overcoming injuries along the way. His presence could mean more ground-based passes to take advantage of his stride and pace. While the Belgian defense is fatigued after a long game against Senegal, Pepi remains fresh and ready.

Though not as dynamic as Balogun, Pepi’s record of 13 goals in 40 appearances for the USMNT shows he can find the net.

Haji Wright: Adding Physicality

For a stronger physical presence, Haji Wright might be the option. The Coventry City striker has played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League, scoring 17 goals in 31 games. Wright offers a tough frame and aerial threat that Balogun does not, although he lacks the same speed.

His style could help wear down the Belgian defense early, possibly creating chances for others like Pepi later. The main concern is Wright’s recent lack of playing time; he hasn’t played more than 70 minutes since late April and has had very limited minutes since early May. Fitness could be a factor in such a demanding game.

Brenden Aaronson: Tactical Flexibility

Brenden Aaronson is not a traditional striker, and his recent performances have been uneven. Still, he might offer a unique tactical solution. Known for his versatility with Leeds United in the Premier League, Aaronson could shift to the left wing, allowing Christian Pulisic to move into a central forward position.

This setup would leave the USMNT without a classic striker but might confuse Belgium and create new offensive options. It would require some adjustments from manager Mauricio Pochettino but could open up unexpected opportunities.
