Manchester United's Left-Back Search Hits Roadblock with Joaquin Seys
Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has hit a major roadblock, with Club Brugge making it clear that Joaquin Seys is going nowhere this summer.
The 21-year-old, one of the brightest talents in Belgium, has been firmly taken off the market. Reports in Belgium say Brugge are prepared to reject what would be a record sale for the club, determined to keep their first-choice left-back for at least another season.
Seys has started all three of Brugge’s games this campaign after a standout year in which he made 55 appearances, scored five goals and laid on eight assists. He is not just part of the team; he is a cornerstone of it. And Brugge, eyeing another strong season in the Jupiler Pro League, are refusing to dismantle their side.
United have not yet submitted a formal bid, but the stance from Brugge is already brutally clear. Even an offer on the level of the £34million Arsenal paid earlier in the window for Christos Tzolis would not be enough to make them blink. For now, Seys is simply not for sale.
That position affects more than just United. Seys has attracted interest from Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Benfica and Porto, but every suitor is being told the same thing: wait. With three years left on his contract, Brugge hold all the cards.
It is a hardline approach that sits in contrast to previous comments from boss Ivan Leko, who has admitted the club can struggle to resist major bids.
“If there’s a lot of money on the table, it’s obviously not easy to say no. The board’s aim is still to build a team that’s even better than last season,” Leko said, stressing that timing is everything when it comes to big exits. “The right time to leave will come. Tzolis has proved that. Let’s hope they’re all still here in September.”
For Michael Carrick and United’s recruitment team, the message is frustratingly simple: look elsewhere.
Carrick’s options at left-back are already tight. Luke Shaw is into the final year of his contract, his long-term future unresolved. Patrick Dorgu, once seen as a potential solution in the role, is now being used higher up the pitch. United want a specialist, not another compromise.
Seys is now the second left-back this summer to be effectively ruled out of reach. Earlier in the window, Newcastle knocked back United’s interest in Lewis Hall, making it clear he remains part of their plans.
Attention may now swing more sharply towards Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas. The 19-year-old, another left-sided option, has a release clause in his contract, making any move far more straightforward from a negotiation standpoint than the Seys saga.
United still intend to do business before the window closes. The question is no longer whether they can prise Seys out of Brugge. It is who they turn to next in a race against time to fix a position that threatens to define Carrick’s first season in charge.
