The 2026-27 UEFA Champions League wraps up Matchday 1 on Thursday with a heavyweight double bill: Manchester United and Bayern Munich both opening their campaigns, dark horses lurking, and debutants dreaming.
Here’s how the night is shaping up across Europe.
PSV vs Shakhtar Donetsk: Firepower on Both Sides
PSV have been bullying the Eredivisie for a while now. Europe is where the scrutiny really starts.
Peter Bosz sends out a side that looks built to dominate the ball. Ivan Perisic brings experience and guile in midfield, USMNT striker Ricardo Pepi leads the line, and Sergiño Dest has nailed down the right-back slot after choosing to stay put in Eindhoven. They’ll be expected to dictate the tempo at home.
They won’t have it all their own way.
Shakhtar Donetsk arrive with the same blueprint that has defined them for years: top Ukrainian talent fused with Brazilian flair. Their three starting attackers are all young Brazilians, and six of their projected XI hail from Brazil, including striker Kaua Elias. Arda Turan, now on the touchline, leans into that identity.
Both sides are missing pieces. PSV are without Mauro Júnior and long-term absentee Jerdy Schouten. Shakhtar travel minus Marlon and several other first-choice options. Yet the Ukrainians, champions at home again despite the ongoing war, still carry serious attacking threat.
PSV’s quality and home advantage should tilt it. Shakhtar’s courage going forward should keep it wild.

Fenerbahce vs Roma: Big Spenders Meet a Serie A Juggernaut
The Şükrü Saracoğlu will crackle for this one.
Fenerbahce are back in the Champions League and have spent like a club determined to stay there. Mason Greenwood offers directness from the wing, Nathan Aké anchors the defence at centre-back, and Ederson guards the goal. Romelu Lukaku waits as a heavyweight option up front, a battering ram for the big nights.
They’ve already felt both sides of early-season pressure. A defeat to Besiktas at the weekend stung, but they did their job against Lyon in the playoff round to reach this stage.
Across from them stands a Roma side transformed under Gian Piero Gasperini. Perfect in Serie A so far, they come into Europe with momentum and a clear attacking hierarchy. Donyell Malen is the reference point up front, the Dutch international thriving off the service of Paulo Dybala, the long-time heartbeat of the club, and teenage Portuguese talent Rodrigo Mora.
Roma’s ceiling looks higher. Fenerbahce’s home crowd and attacking depth should stop this from becoming an Italian statement win.

Sabah vs Manchester United: A Debut on One Side, a Reset on the Other
Sabah step into the Champions League for the first time. Manchester United step back into it with a sense of relief.
The Azeri club have already lived a season’s worth of drama in the qualifying rounds. They arrive in the league phase as underdogs in every match, playing with what feels like house money. Any point, any goal, becomes part of club folklore.
Their squad is a patchwork of stories. Christian Nwachukwu, a 20-year-old Nigerian winger, offers pace and promise. He links with Rwandan striker Joy Lance Mickels, a seasoned forward who has wandered through different leagues to land here.
United, under Michael Carrick, are searching for rhythm. Four points from their first three Premier League games has not exactly sparked euphoria. Europe, though, offers a different stage and a chance to reset.
The injury list complicates things. Marcus Rashford is a doubt after limping off against Everton. Manuel Ugarte and Amad Diallo are also among those sidelined. That opens the door for Benjamin Šeško to start up front.
The club’s summer business points to a planned rebuild rather than a scattergun splurge: Carlos Baleba arrives from Brighton, Andrey Santos from Chelsea, and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, adding legs and versatility in midfield.
Sabah might find a moment, maybe even a goal, in front of a crowd that will treat this like a final. But this night should belong to United.

Bodo/Glimt vs Bayern Munich: The Dark Horse vs the Standard-Bearer
Nobody underestimates Bodo/Glimt anymore.
The Norwegian champions have carved out a reputation as Europe’s favourite disruptors, and a 6–5 aggregate win over Union Saint-Gilloise in the playoff phase underlined that they haven’t lost their edge. They arrive in the league phase already in mid-season form, 19 games into their domestic campaign with 47 points and a +34 goal difference.
Patrick Berg leads a side that knows exactly what it is. Yet they’re not at full strength. Two starting midfielders, including Håkon Evjen, are out, and forward August Mikkelsen is also missing.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, carry the weight of expectation. They dominate the Bundesliga year after year, but the Champions League has slipped from their grasp too often for comfort. Vincent Kompany inherits a squad that screams experience and continuity.
Harry Kane, Luis Díaz and Michael Olise form the attacking core, with Alphonso Davies driving from the back. Bayern resisted the urge to overhaul in the transfer window. They know the mission: lift the trophy next summer.
Bodo/Glimt will not roll over. They rarely do. Bayern, though, should have too much across 90 minutes.

Slavia Praha vs RC Lens: A Chance to Reset
Slavia Praha want to erase last season’s Champions League memory as quickly as possible. They were one of three teams to finish the League Phase without a single win, a poor reflection on the best side in Czechia.
This feels like an opportunity.
They host an RC Lens team with limited recent pedigree at this level and a rough start to the new Ligue 1 campaign. Back-to-back league defeats have already raised questions about their ability to juggle domestic demands with European travel.
Slavia are not at full capacity. Lukas Provod, David Zima and Tomas Holes are all out. Even so, at home, they will expect to set the tone against a French side still trying to find its European identity.
Lens lean heavily on Florian Thauvin, their standout attacking midfielder, to create something from nothing. If Slavia can contain him, the balance swings their way.

Como vs RB Leipzig: Newcomers With Ambition
Lake Como, Champions League nights. It still sounds surreal.
Yet here they are, under Cesc Fàbregas, hosting RB Leipzig in their first ever match in this competition. Both clubs share a philosophy: identify elite young talent, polish it, sell it on. One has been doing it on this stage for a while. The other is just arriving.
Como’s XI is anything but timid. In the No. 10 role, 22-year-old Nico Paz is seen as a potential heir to Lionel Messi for Argentina. On the wings, Croatian international Martin Baturina and Senegal’s Assane Diao offer invention and direct running. Moise Kean is a powerful option to lead the line.
Leipzig, under Martin Demichelis, bring their own mix of youth and promise. Morocco international Neil El Aynaoui and Norway’s Antonio Nusa provide width. Romulo and Christoph Baumgartner are out, but ex-Chelsea forward Marc Guiu is a fresh addition to the squad.
Yet Leipzig don’t fully convince right now. Their Bundesliga start has been uneven, and doubts linger about Demichelis’ ability to turn talent into a ruthless, coherent unit.
Como, on the other hand, look like one of Serie A’s most upwardly mobile teams. They have the feel of a side ready to push for a domestic title and to rattle a few established names in Europe.
Prediction: Como 3–1 RB Leipzig
Matchday 1 ends with giants under pressure, newcomers unafraid, and a handful of clubs about to discover whether their summer plans were bold enough for this stage. The real question now: who uses this first night as a launchpad, and who spends the rest of the autumn chasing what they lost here?
