Tuchel Allows Medicals for England Players During World Cup

Thomas Tuchel will not stand in the way of England players trying to sort out their club futures in the middle of a World Cup – as long as it does not cut across his preparation.

The England manager has confirmed he is ready to allow members of his squad to undergo medicals for transfers during the tournament, a rare but increasingly necessary concession in a summer when the World Cup and the transfer window collide.

“The doctor is ready to take any medical if needed,” Tuchel told reporters before England’s opening game, stressing that the national team’s work comes first. “If anyone has chance to complete a transfer, we’ll not stand in the way, but it has to align with our schedule and goals which is to be focused and prepare for matches. The last day before the match and the second last day, not. Until now, no player approached me.”

That stance lands directly in the middle of Manchester City’s plans.

City’s Anderson pursuit meets World Cup reality

City are pushing ahead with a major reshaping of their squad after the departure of club captain Bernardo Silva. Elliot Anderson has emerged as their leading target, with the Premier League champions viewing the Nottingham Forest midfielder as a key piece for the next cycle.

Their first move has already been rebuffed. Forest rejected an opening bid and value the 23‑year‑old at around £100 million. Anderson is under a long-term contract at the City Ground and Forest know it. They are in no rush to sell, and they have a price in mind.

City, though, are not alone. Manchester United have also registered interest, even if the understanding is that Anderson favours a move to the Etihad Stadium. That preference gives City leverage, but not a free run.

As talks stall, City have started to examine alternatives. One name under consideration is Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, with the club exploring whether a deal for the Italian could be revived if Forest hold firm on Anderson’s fee.

Bayern Munich, for their part, are looking at the Manchester City squad from a different angle, assessing the possibility of signing a City defender this summer as they rebuild their own back line.

Tuchel’s green light changes the landscape

Into that swirl of negotiations steps Tuchel’s clear, pragmatic position. By opening the door to medicals inside the England camp – within strict time limits around matchdays – he has given clubs a crucial sliver of access to players otherwise locked into tournament routines.

For City, with Enzo Maresca’s appointment close and a busy recruitment drive already in motion, that flexibility could be decisive. It means that if Anderson’s situation accelerates while he is away with England, the medical component of any transfer need not wait until after the World Cup.

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, and his recruitment team now have room to move. They can continue talks with Forest knowing that, should an agreement be reached, the logistical hurdle of a medical can be cleared without dragging Anderson out of England’s rhythm – as long as it respects Tuchel’s blackout period on the day before and two days before matches.

Tuchel framed it as a duty of care as much as a concession to club football. “We’re always happy to help have clarity around the player,” he said. Clarity for the player, clarity for the clubs, and, crucially, clarity for England’s preparation.

A World Cup played to the soundtrack of the market

The implications stretch beyond City. Every major Premier League side with England internationals in their sights now knows the rules of engagement. Deals can be advanced. Medicals can be done. The line is simple: not at the cost of England’s match focus.

For players like Anderson, the next few weeks will be a balancing act. He will stay locked into England’s World Cup campaign while monitoring, at a distance, the negotiations that could define the next phase of his club career.

City must decide whether to go back to Forest with an improved offer or pivot more aggressively towards alternatives such as Tonali. Forest must weigh up a huge potential fee against the value of keeping a key asset. United lurk in the background. Bayern circle other pieces of the City puzzle.

The World Cup will play out on one stage. On another, behind closed doors, Tuchel’s open door to medicals ensures the transfer market will not wait.
