Barcelona's Defensive Dilemma: Deco's Urgent Search for Experience

Barcelona’s defence has a new problem to solve, and Deco is in a hurry.

Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool has ripped a hole straight through the heart of Hansi Flick’s back line, and inside the club there is a clear verdict: the current centre-back group is not enough to carry Barcelona through the entire 2026/27 season.

Deco hunts experience, not another project

According to AS, sporting director Deco is now working flat out in the market, targeting a very specific profile: a left-footed centre-back with experience and reliability who can walk into the squad and compete from day one.

This isn’t about signing the most talented youngster on offer. It’s about survival over a long, demanding campaign.

Right now, Flick’s main central defensive options are Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martín and Andreas Christensen. Four names, plenty of quality, but not much margin for error. One injury spell, one suspension run, and the rotation thins out quickly.

That’s where Alvaro Cortes should come in. On paper, he’s the natural next step, a young defender who can plug gaps and grow into the role. In reality, the club is not convinced he’s ready to shoulder the responsibility of being a regular first-team centre-back across an entire season.

And the situation is getting trickier.

Cortes complication adds urgency

Cortes does not want to return to Barça Atlètic and already has offers on the table from elsewhere. A departure in the coming days is very much on the cards, which would strip away another layer of depth and crank up the pressure on Deco’s search.

The message from the sporting department is clear: Barcelona cannot afford to replace Araujo with another developmental piece. They need someone who arrives as competition, not as a long-term experiment.

That is shaping every decision Deco makes.

Why age matters in Barça’s shortlist

The financial reality at the club means the target has to fit both the tactical and economic plan. A left-footed defender, experienced enough to handle immediate responsibility, but still attainable within Barcelona’s budget.

Luka Vuskovic, for instance, was admired internally before his move to Brighton. At 19, though, he was judged too young for the current need, even if his talent is not in doubt.

The same logic rules out Jon Martin of Real Sociedad for now. Barcelona like him, they rate his potential, but his age again clashes with the urgency of the situation.

Even Cristian Romero, a proven, high-level centre-back, was not seen as the perfect fit for what Deco wants. This is not simply a search for the biggest name or the most established profile. It’s a search for a defender who ticks a very tight set of boxes: left-footed, experienced, ready now, and financially viable.

Barcelona have made their stance obvious. After losing Araujo and facing the likely exit of Cortes, they are not just shopping for “a” centre-back.

They are hunting for one very specific piece that could define how stable – or fragile – their season becomes.
