Towson Tigers Secure 3-1 Victory Over Bucknell Bison
TOWSON, Md. – Towson needed a spark. It found three of them before halftime.
The Tigers blitzed Bucknell with a three-goal first-half surge and rode that cushion to a 3-1 non-conference win on Sunday at Tiger Field, handing the Bison their fourth straight defeat.
Towson’s Fast Start
The tone changed early. Just over 14 minutes in, Towson (2-2-2) pounced on a loose ball. Meron Koro reacted quickest after a Sarah McFarland save, following up the rebound and tucking it into an open net for 1-0.
Koro nearly doubled the lead shortly after, a warning that Bucknell’s back line struggled to heed. The damage came instead from the bench.
Substitute Jayla Caldwell stepped on and took over the half. Twice in five minutes, she punished Bucknell on corner kicks to blow the game open.
Her first was textbook: a clean, decisive header from the set piece. The second was more chaotic. Bucknell failed to clear its lines, the ball dropped to Caldwell, and she lifted a composed lob over McFarland into the far-side netting. Suddenly, it was 3-0 and Towson was cruising.
Bucknell did have a glimpse of life before the break. At the 20-minute mark, Gaby Parker sliced between two defenders and broke into the box, but Towson goalkeeper Keagan Williams stood tall, cut down the angle, and smothered the chance.
Bison Response After the Interval
The game could have drifted away from Bucknell after the interval. Instead, the Bison came out sharper and on the front foot, outshooting Towson 10-9 in the second half and finally turning pressure into something more tangible.
Runs from wide areas started to stretch Towson. On the right, Bella Connell carved her way into the area, only to run out of room as the defense closed in. The breakthrough arrived not long after, and fittingly, from a dead ball.
In the 58th minute, Bucknell made a set piece count. Clare Nemsick delivered the service, and Louisa Thomsen met it with a firm header that crashed off the inside of the left post and bounced just over the goal line. Towson’s three-goal cushion was trimmed to two. Thomsen had her first goal of the season; Nemsick her second assist.
Bucknell kept pushing, but Towson refused to buckle. The Tigers still carved out chances of their own, finishing with a 21-16 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Between the Posts and What Comes Next
Both teams leaned on their goalkeepers at different stages. McFarland made four saves in the first half for Bucknell before giving way to Reese Dolan, who came on after the break and turned aside two shots in 45 shutout minutes. At the other end, Williams anchored Towson’s win with five saves.
For Bucknell, the loss drops them to 3-5 and extends a frustrating skid, but the second-half response offered something to build on.
That foundation will be tested quickly. The Bison close out non-conference play with a trip to Villanova on Thursday at 4 p.m., then dive straight into Patriot League action at home against Lehigh on Sept. 19.
