Tottenham's Quiet International Break: Focus on Recovery and Youth
Tottenham’s international picture looks strangely thin this break – and that might suit them just fine.
Only two senior Spurs players have been called up so far, both heading to the same camp. Central defenders Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke have been selected by Netherlands boss Xavi Hernandez, a double nod to Tottenham’s growing strength at the back.
Beyond that, it’s quiet. Almost too quiet for a club of Spurs’ size.
Porro ruled out, Kudus stays put
Two names who won’t be travelling are just as significant.
Pedro Porro has been withdrawn from Spain’s squad after the hamstring injury he picked up in the 2-3 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday. That decision was straightforward. He limped off, the problem was clear, and Spain moved on.
Mohammed Kudus is a different story.
As reported by Alasdair Gold of Football.London, Kudus has chosen to pull out of the Ghana squad himself. No pressure, no public row, just a calculated decision to stay in London, continue his recovery and push towards full fitness instead of joining up for AFCON qualifiers.
It’s a call that raises an eyebrow, but also says plenty.
Kudus hasn’t started a match since before his injury last season. He’s been eased back in with cameos, each one a little sharper than the last. Saturday was his standout display so far: one assist on the board, another ruled out for offside, and a reminder of the threat he brings when he’s anywhere near his best.
For Spurs, his choice is a gift. Three weeks at Hotspur Way, no long flights, no stop-start minutes, just focused work to get him truly match-ready. For a player still trying to nail down a starting spot, that’s a statement of intent.
Academy rewards for Hardy and Williams-Barnett
The senior squad may be light on international travel, but the pathway beneath it is humming.
Two Tottenham academy graduates have earned England U19 call-ups: defender Malachi Hardy and attacker Luca Williams-Barnett.
Hardy turned heads in pre-season with a string of confident displays and serious minutes for the first team. Williams-Barnett, widely seen as one of the standout talents in the academy, has already been training regularly with the senior squad, even if he hasn’t yet made a Premier League bench.
Both have been involved with England at youth level before, but this is their first step into the U19 setup. A small line on a squad list, a huge marker in their development.
So while the international break will be quieter than usual around Tottenham’s senior dressing room, the club’s story doesn’t pause. Key defenders on duty with the Netherlands, a marquee attacker choosing club over country to chase full fitness, and two teenagers taking their next step with England.
For Spurs, the question is simple: when everyone returns, who will be ready to turn this quieter window into a louder second act to the season?
