Thilo Kehrer's Debut: Ajax Triumphs with 5-1 Victory
Thilo Kehrer’s first real night in an Ajax shirt could hardly have been scripted better.
The German defender, handed his full VriendenLoterij Eredivisie debut, powered the Amsterdam club to a 5-1 win at Fortuna Sittard on Saturday, scoring, assisting and writing his name into the club’s record books.
Brandt strikes, Fortuna bite back
Ajax started on the front foot and found their breakthrough through Julian Brandt, who opened the scoring to settle any early nerves. It looked like the platform for a routine away win.
Fortuna Sittard refused to play along. Just after the interval, Anthony Descotte pounced to level the match and drag the home crowd back into it. For a brief spell, Ajax wobbled. The game felt open, edgy, a touch too wild for a side still trying to steady itself this season.
That was Kehrer’s cue.
Kehrer takes charge
On 62 minutes, the defender stormed into the box and met a cross with a thumping header, restoring Ajax’s lead and flipping the mood in an instant. From anxiety to authority in one leap.

Speaking to ESPN NL after the match, he kept the focus on the collective effort.
"I'm happy for the performance, the goal, and the assist," Kehrer said. "But the most important thing is that the team won. We had to work hard until we opened up the game, and then in the end it looked like a comfortable win."
By the final whistle, it did.
Goals flow as Ajax turn the screw
Once Kehrer had tilted the contest, Ajax did not ease off. The pressure told, and the scoreline swelled.
Davy Klaassen joined the party, finding the net to give Ajax breathing space. Kasper Dolberg added another, sharpening the edge of a ruthless second half. Youri Baas then stepped up to complete the scoring, his goal the fifth and final strike in a statement victory that looked far less straightforward an hour earlier.
What began as a test of resilience ended as a showcase of attacking depth and renewed confidence.
Pain, communication, and a new anchor
Kehrer’s night was not without concern. Late in the first half he took a heavy blow that briefly raised fears his full debut might be cut short. He brushed it off.
"It was just painful, but nothing to worry about," he explained afterwards.
His focus, instead, stayed on the work still to be done in Ajax’s defensive unit. Kehrer underlined how much of their improvement must come from clarity and cohesion at the back.
"In the end, it is about communication and giving each other the best instructions to defend together and adjust positions. It's all in a positive way to perform."
The message was clear: one commanding performance does not mean the job is finished. For a club that has paid the price for instability in recent seasons, that kind of voice on the pitch is as valuable as any goal.
Record start, tougher tests ahead
Kehrer has played just eight minutes off the bench before this match. Now, after 90 influential minutes, he has a goal, an assist and a small slice of Ajax history to his name. More importantly for the club, he looks like a defender ready to bring order to a line that has too often looked exposed.
With a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures looming, Ajax will need that stability. The scoreline in Sittard was emphatic, but Kehrer was quick to stress that standards must keep rising, regardless of the margin of victory.
The debut has set the tone. The real question is whether this night in Sittard marks the start of a new, reliable backbone for Ajax’s season.
