Taylor Harwood-Bellis: Southampton's Best Centre-Back Amid Transfer Interest
Tonda Eckert has no interest in downplaying Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ value. Not to his team, and not to the market.
On the eve of Southampton’s Championship clash with Stoke City, the Saints head coach described the Aston Villa target as “the best centre-back in the Championship last season” and one of the best defenders in the country – and made it clear he expects the 24-year-old to handle the noise just as calmly as before.
Harwood-Bellis joined Southampton from Manchester City in 2023, initially on loan with an obligation to buy, and has since climbed all the way to senior England recognition, earning a cap in the Nations League against the Republic of Ireland in 2024. His rise has inevitably dragged him into the summer transfer storm.
Southampton have already turned away serious money. After fending off interest from Benfica, the club this week rejected a bid from Aston Villa worth more than £18m. Saints are understood to be holding out for around £25m for a player they made permanent for £20m two years ago.
Eckert, speaking to BBC Radio Solent, did not hide why there is such a queue.
“We know how important Taylor is for us,” he said. “I think he's been the best centre-back in the Championship last season.
“It's completely normal that if you are among the best centre-backs in the country there is interest, and there has been.
“He's always dealt with it in a great way, very professional, but he's a Southampton player.
“In the end my job is to train the players. There are some decisions for the board and owners to take.”
The message was clear: Southampton will set the price, the hierarchy will decide, and until that changes, Harwood-Bellis plays.
Eckert has no hesitation about starting him against Stoke. The defender has already proved he can shut out speculation when it matters most. The coach pointed back to the closing hours of the January transfer window as evidence.
“On 31 January, before we went to Stoke, there was heavy interest for him and he played one of the best games for us,” Eckert recalled.
The stakes are higher now, the numbers bigger, the suitors richer. The question is no longer whether clubs want Taylor Harwood-Bellis. It’s whether anyone is willing to test Southampton’s resolve hard enough to prise him away.
