Julian Alvarez Considers Arsenal Move as Atletico Stands Firm
Julian Alvarez’s future has been dragged to the brink. According to Spanish journalist Pedro Morata, the Atletico Madrid forward is expected to decide today whether to open formal talks with Arsenal or stay put in the Spanish capital.
Not long ago, there was no debate. Alvarez had made it clear he would only leave Atletico for Barcelona, vetoing any other move. That line has blurred. Morata reports that, while the Argentine still has “many doubts” and no real desire to return to England, he is now willing to consider Arsenal.
Right now, the situation is said to be tilted 55 per cent towards remaining in Spain and 45 per cent towards a move to north London. For a player who was previously fixated on Catalonia, that is a major shift.
Arsenal’s bid on the table – and Atletico’s response
Arsenal have already made their play. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Atletico director of football Mateu Alemany recently flew to London for face-to-face talks with the Premier League club. Out of those meetings came an opening offer: £103 million plus £4m in add-ons.
Atletico’s response was blunt. They want around £129m.
Publicly, CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has gone even further, insisting in the past that the club would not accept offers of €150m or even €200m for Alvarez. That stance underlines just how hard Arsenal will have to push if they are serious about landing him before the window shuts.
Yet there is a crack in the wall. Atletico are understood to be open to negotiating with Arsenal, partly because they are keen on bringing in Viktor Gyokeres as a replacement. The problem is obvious: any deal for Alvarez has to be rich enough to fund that move, without leaving Arsenal feeling they have been dragged into a bidding war they cannot justify.
Omission, anger and a souring atmosphere
The tension around Alvarez is now spilling into the stands. He sat out Atletico’s opening La Liga fixture, a 2-0 home win over Malaga, and the reaction was ugly. Sections of the home support turned on him, with hostile chants ringing out as speculation over his future intensified.
Diego Simeone tried to cool the situation, putting Alvarez’s absence down to fitness rather than transfer manoeuvring.
“We don't believe Julian Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow's game,” Simeone said. “Hopefully, over these next four days, he'll make further progress and we'll be closer to where we want him to be.”
The explanation was straightforward. The timing was anything but. With negotiations in the air and the deadline closing in, leaving out one of the club’s key forwards only fuelled the sense that a departure is edging closer.
Decision day for Alvarez – and for Arsenal
The clock is now a factor for everyone involved. Arsenal must decide whether to edge towards Atletico’s asking price or walk away and move on to other attacking options. Atletico must judge how far they can push without scaring off one of the few clubs capable of paying anything close to their valuation.
And Alvarez? He is expected to make his position clear today.
If he signals a willingness to join Mikel Arteta’s side and the two clubs can close the gap, Arsenal could yet land the marquee forward they have been chasing. If not, Arteta will have to pivot quickly, with the window about to slam shut and alternative targets suddenly carrying even greater importance.
One way or another, Alvarez’s call will shape the final days of this market – and possibly the direction of Arsenal’s season.
