Arsenal Sign Ezri Konsa: First Defensive Move of the Summer

Arsenal have turned to a Premier League ever-present to shore up their back line, sealing the signing of England international Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa on a long-term deal.

The 28-year-old becomes the club’s first defensive recruit of the window, arriving in north London after seven seasons at Villa Park and more than 200 appearances across all competitions. Reliability has been his calling card. So has versatility.

From Charlton prodigy to Premier League mainstay

Konsa’s rise has been steady, not spectacular – but always upward.

He came through the ranks at Charlton Athletic and broke into the first team in 2016, quickly emerging as one of the club’s standout young defenders. Two seasons of senior football were enough to attract serious attention. Brentford moved in 2018, handing him a platform in the Championship.

One season in west London was all it took. His performances in the 2018–19 campaign pushed his reputation up a level and opened the door to the top flight. Aston Villa made their move in 2019, and Konsa never looked back.

At Villa, he grew into one of the Premier League’s most dependable defenders. Comfortable at centre-back and equally at home on the right of defence, he offered managers tactical options and a consistent level of performance that rarely dipped. That flexibility now becomes a key asset for Arsenal.

An England defender at his peak

Konsa’s club form eventually forced its way onto the international stage.

He represented England at Under-20 and Under-21 level before finally earning his senior debut in 2023. From there, he established himself as a regular in the Three Lions set-up, featuring at Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup.

Arsenal are not signing potential. They are signing a defender in his prime, tested in high-pressure matches for club and country.

Berta: ‘High quality, high standards’

Sporting director Andrea Berta underlined exactly why Arsenal moved for Konsa.

“We are delighted to complete the signing of Ezri Konsa. He is a defender of high quality, and his physical attributes, composure and tactical intelligence have made him one of the most consistent players at this level in the Premier League,” Berta said.

“Thanks to his ability to play at centre-back and right-back, Ezri will give our team important flexibility, while maintaining the high defensive standards that are a key element in our pursuit of major honours.”

Berta stressed that Arsenal are getting more than just a solid defender.

“We are welcoming a player with proven experience in the Premier League and at international level, along with strong leadership qualities, and he will be able to adapt smoothly to our style of play. Just as importantly, we are welcoming a player who possesses the character and mentality needed to make an immediate impact within our club.”

Number 15 and straight into the fold

Konsa will wear the number 15 shirt at Arsenal and joins his new team-mates in London immediately.

A proven Premier League performer, an England regular, and a defender trusted on multiple fronts – Arsenal have made their move. Now comes the real test: how quickly Konsa can turn that pedigree into presence at the heart of a team chasing major honours.
