Spain's Nations League Plans: Barça Core and Striker Battle
Luis de la Fuente’s plans for the UEFA Nations League are taking shape, and the picture is clear in one area at least: midfield. The only expected tweak is the return of Fermin Lopez, who is in line to step in for Gavi.
Gavi will miss the opening match at Wembley through suspension, a double blow for a player already fighting to regain rhythm after the injury he suffered at the start of La Liga against Elche. That setback cost him his starting spot at Barcelona, but it has not dented his standing with the national coach. De la Fuente rates him too highly to close the door. Gavi will remain in the frame as soon as he is available.
Striker Debate
Up front, the debate is sharper. Two places look locked: Mikel Oyarzabal and Ferran Torres are virtually untouchable in the attacking pool. The real intrigue lies in the slot once occupied by Borja Iglesias.
Iglesias began the season hampered by a soleus muscle problem and has barely featured. That lack of continuity has opened the door to others. Behind the established names, a wave of young forwards is pressing hard: Sergio Camello, Roberto, Espi and Gonzalo are all in contention to claim that third-striker role and force their way into the Nations League squad. One of them could find his career changed by a single phone call.
Selection is complicated by the numbers. Only 23 players can be registered on the group-stage lists in the UEFA Nations League, down from the 26 allowed for the final phase. The margin for experimentation is thinner, yet the calendar demands it. Spain will play four games in this window, and rotation will not be a luxury but a necessity. Expect De la Fuente to widen the pool even if he must be ruthless with the final cut.
Barcelona's Influence
Through it all, Barcelona sit at the heart of the project. The Catalan club is set to provide the backbone of the national team once again. Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Rodri and Lamine Yamal are all seen as certainties for the list.
They may not be alone. Gavi and Fermin Lopez could both join them, while Xavi Espart is also in the conversation. In the most Barça-tinged scenario, Spain could head into the Nations League with 10 players from the same club dressing room. For De la Fuente, that shared chemistry could become a powerful shortcut to cohesion in a compressed international window.
Upcoming Matches
The schedule offers no easing-in period. Spain open their Nations League campaign against England at Wembley on 26 September, a high-voltage start in London. Three days later, Croatia arrive in Seville on the 29th, before Spain travel to Oviedo to face the Czech Republic on 3 October. The window closes with a demanding trip to Split to meet Croatia again on the 6th of next month.
By then, the questions around that final striker slot – and just how far this Barça core can carry Spain – will have their first real answers.
