Scott McTominay's Heart Surgery Success and Return to Training
Napoli say Scott McTominay’s heart surgery “was a complete success” and expect the Scotland midfielder back in training before the month is out.
The 29-year-old underwent an ablation procedure on Tuesday morning at Spire Manchester Hospital, a minimally invasive operation used to correct irregular heart rhythms. The issue was picked up after he was taken off 56 minutes into Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on 30 August.
Tests revealed a mild benign arrhythmia. The club moved quickly, opting for corrective treatment rather than taking any risks with a player in his prime.
In a statement, Napoli confirmed McTominay will rest for two weeks before rejoining full training, keeping alive their original hope that the former Manchester United midfielder will be available again after the international break in early October.
McTominay himself tried to calm any fears when the news first broke. Posting on Instagram, he wrote: “See you soon Napoli. I won't take long.”
The timeline matters beyond Naples. Sebastien Pocognoli is preparing for his first four games as Scotland head coach at the end of September and into early October, with home and away fixtures against Slovenia plus Nations League meetings with North Macedonia and Switzerland.
Whether McTominay can feature in that opening chapter of Pocognoli’s tenure will depend on how he responds once he is back on the training pitch.
According to the NHS, an arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats too quickly, too slowly, or with an irregular rhythm. For now, Napoli are adamant the problem has been fixed — and that one of their key midfielders is on a clear path back.
