Scott McTominay will step away from Napoli duty in the coming days to undergo heart surgery after the club confirmed he has developed a “mild benign arrhythmia”.
The 29-year-old midfielder, a cornerstone of Napoli’s recent success since his £25 million move from Manchester United in 2024, is set for a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) and will miss a crucial stretch of games before the international break.
Napoli move fast to ease fears
Napoli announced the diagnosis on Tuesday, stressing both the urgency of the procedure and the reassuring prognosis from specialists, who consider the condition relatively common among elite athletes and not career-threatening.
In their statement, the club said: “Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days. He will be available again after the international break.”
The message was clear: a serious issue, handled quickly, with the expectation that McTominay will return to full competition once the break is over.
From Como defeat to operating theatre
McTominay’s last outing came in a shock home defeat to Como at the weekend, a result that only deepened the sense of unease around Massimiliano Allegri’s early tenure. Before the heart issue became public, Allegri had already hinted that his midfield general was not at full tilt.
“McTominay had some problems with blisters, so he’s been training on a limited basis. Hopefully, we can get him into the best possible condition as soon as possible,” the Napoli coach said after the Como loss.
