Saudi Roshn League Calendar Shake-Up for Gulf 27
The Saudi Roshn League is bracing for a shake-up to its calendar, with the national team’s Arabian Gulf Cup campaign set to take priority over domestic action.
Saudi Arabia will host the 27th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, “Gulf 27”, in Jeddah from 23 September to 6 October, and the tournament is already leaving its mark on the league schedule.
According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiah, the Roshn League authorities are preparing a series of fixture changes after a direct request from national team coach Georgios Donis. The Greek manager has asked for the national team’s training camp to be extended by an extra seven days before the tournament kicks off, a demand that forces officials to redraw the calendar.
The adjustments are expected to hit several rounds, with the eighth round standing out. That matchweek is currently set for 17 September, less than a week before “Gulf 27” begins. League officials now anticipate postponing the entire round.
That would push back one of the league’s marquee fixtures: a high-stakes clásico between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad at Kingdom Arena. The clash had been ringed on calendars across the country, but the national team’s preparation window looks set to take precedence.
Donis is pushing hard for every extra day. He wants Saudi Arabia to arrive at the Gulf tournament in peak condition, chasing a title that has eluded the Green Falcons for 23 years. The last time Saudi Arabia lifted the Arabian Gulf Cup was in 2003, a drought that weighs heavily on every new campaign.
The Greek coach took charge of the national team in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. That journey ended at the group stage, with Saudi Arabia finishing bottom of Group 8 on just two points.
Now, with the Gulf title on home soil and a generation to restore, Donis is ready to bend the domestic calendar in search of a different ending.
