Jose Mourinho's Call That Kept Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho has lifted the lid on the phone call he believes helped keep Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid and away from a record-breaking move to Arsenal.
The Brazilian forward spent the early part of the summer heavily linked with a switch to North London, with Arsenal ready to go all in. The Premier League club were prepared to smash both their transfer record and wage structure for the 26-year-old, with reports of an offer in the region of €150 million for a player whose previous deal was due to expire next summer.
That fee would have set a new benchmark for a British transfer. Arsenal saw an opportunity: a world-class winger, entering his peak, with contract leverage on his side. They pushed. Hard.
Madrid, though, pushed back. And so did Mourinho.
The Portuguese coach, back in the Bernabeu dugout this summer, has now revealed the direct message he delivered to Vinicius at the height of the speculation.
"I called him, I told him Vini, where do you want to go? You only know Real Madrid," Mourinho told El Chiringuito TV.
His warning was blunt. Leave Madrid, and only then will you understand what you walked away from.
"When you leave, then you'll know what Real Madrid is. Don't go. It's not worth it. I was sure [he would stay] because he is in love with Real Madrid!"
Vinicius ultimately turned his back on Arsenal’s advances and signed a lucrative new long-term contract in the Spanish capital, extending his stay to 2032 and taking his spell at the club into a potential eighth season and beyond.
For Arsenal, it was the one that got away. For Mourinho, it was a reminder of a long-held belief: when you are at Real Madrid, every exit door leads somewhere smaller.
