Ron Jans Reflects on FC Utrecht's Struggles After PSV Defeat

Ron Jans watched FC Utrecht’s collapse against PSV and didn’t just see a scoreline. He saw a coach he recognised.

A 1-6 defeat in your own stadium, four games gone, one point on the board. For Anthony Correia, it already feels like crisis territory. For Jans, speaking on NOS Studio Sport, it felt uncomfortably familiar.

“I have to say, it does hurt me,” Jans admitted. “Because I had a great time at FC Utrecht. So they have to stick together and fight.”

That word – fight – came back more than once. Jans knows exactly how quickly the mood can turn in Utrecht. Last season he went nine matches without a win. The pressure built, the questions grew sharper, and the mirror got harsher.

“I see those images of Correia and of Willem Janssen,” he said. “I saw that in myself in January as well. That really wasn’t good either, but then I thought: hello, if the leader looks like that…”

The realisation stung him. So he acted.

“The next morning I showed those images to the group,” Jans explained. He put his own body language, his own expression, in front of the dressing room. Then he laid it out clearly: “Listen, that is how it is at that moment, but we are sticking together now and we are going to fight. We will come through it.”

The message landed. Utrecht dragged themselves out of their slump last season. Jans points to that turnaround as proof that a team can still respond when the noise outside is at its loudest.

“You can see that now as well,” he said, turning his words towards Correia. “Then it just has to happen in the next match.”

That next match already feels huge. Utrecht are second from bottom in the Eredivisie, with just a single point from their first four games. Confidence is fragile, patience is thinner, and the league table is unforgiving.

Go Ahead Eagles come to the Domstad next week. For Correia, it is not just another fixture. It is an early test of whether this season becomes a slow recovery – or a long, painful struggle.
