Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano: Mourinho's Key Decisions Ahead

Real Madrid walk into the Rayo Vallecano clash with no margin for error and no time to breathe.

Three points off Barcelona and staring at a brutal run of three games in nine days, Jose Mourinho knows this stretch could shape their season: Rayo at home, Elche away on Tuesday, then a capital derby against Atletico Madrid to close the week. Any slip now, and the pressure spikes.

Reinforcements for Mourinho

The mood around Valdebebas has lifted. The squad that went into the Inter match looking stripped bare suddenly looks deeper, sharper, more balanced.

Aurelien Tchouameni is back in Mourinho’s hands, a key piece returning to the rotation even after being involved against Inter. Marco Asensio has stepped out of the treatment room and back onto the training pitch, recovered from an ill-timed injury that robbed him of momentum.

Thiago also returns to the conversation, another midfield body at a time when the fixture list offers no mercy. For a coach who obsesses over control in the middle of the pitch, these are not small details. They are levers he can pull.

That matters because the Inter game exposed how stretched this squad can look. Arda Guler, Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva all missed that clash through suspension, punished for red cards picked up in last season’s Champions League. Mourinho had to improvise. Now, he can actually choose.

The big question: who partners Bernardo Silva?

One dilemma refuses to go away. In midfield, the central issue is simple: who stands next to Bernardo Silva?

The debate runs through two names – Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde.

Valverde has been running on full throttle since August. He has started all four of Real’s La Liga matches and one in the Champions League, barely seeing the bench. Across the entire season, the Uruguayan has missed just over 20 minutes: taken off in the 77th minute against Malaga, then withdrawn for the final eight minutes against Real Betis last week.

He is the engine, but even engines overheat.

Mourinho has shown he is not blind to that risk. He has spoken with his selections, trying to manage minutes before the campaign hits the heavy winter grind.

Bernardo Silva, by contrast, has been handled more carefully. The Portuguese playmaker started Real’s first two league matches, then came off the bench against Malaga and Betis. In La Liga he has played 205 of a possible 360 minutes – around 57% of the available time.

Those numbers tell their own story. Mourinho wants Silva sharp when the season reaches the decisive stages. He is reluctant to overload his compatriot now, even if the temptation is to lean on him every week.

So the decision lands here: if Bernardo Silva starts, does Mourinho trust Valverde to go again, or does he turn to Camavinga’s legs and freshness? One of them will define the rhythm of Real’s midfield against Rayo.

Arda Guler’s window of opportunity

Up front, another subplot is quietly building.

Arda Guler is expected to come back into the starting XI after missing the Champions League opener. His start to the season has been strong, his talent obvious, but the reality at Real Madrid is ruthless: nobody in the attacking line gets a free ride.

Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham are locked into Mourinho’s plans. They are the pillars, and all three are again tipped to start. That leaves Guler fighting for the remaining space, trying to prove that he is not just a rotation option but a genuine first-choice contender.

Every appearance matters for him. Every touch, every decision, every performance is a fresh argument in front of a coach who has options in every line. Against Rayo, Guler is not just playing for three points. He is playing for his place in the hierarchy.

Defence settled, Diaz waiting

At the back, Mourinho is unlikely to experiment. Stability wins here.

Thibaut Courtois will stand in goal. In front of him, the same back four that faced Inter is set to continue: Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen and Marc Cucurella.

Cucurella, in particular, seems to have convinced Mourinho. The left-back has moved from fringe figure to something closer to a fixed point, while the rest of the defensive unit continues to enjoy the coach’s trust.

Higher up the pitch, there is less room. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Brahim Diaz is expected to start on the bench again, squeezed out by the sheer volume of attacking options. Yan Diomande should also be among the substitutes, waiting for the game to open up.

Real’s starting XI, then, looks almost written in ink. The only real doubt sits in that midfield slot next to Bernardo Silva.

Expected Real Madrid XI vs Rayo Vallecano

  • Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois.
  • Defence: Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen, Marc Cucurella.
  • Midfield: Bernardo Silva, Federico Valverde or Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham.

The stakes are clear. Barcelona are three points away, the calendar is unforgiving, and a derby looms on the horizon. Rayo Vallecano arrive at the wrong time for Real to show any sign of weakness.
