Real Madrid vs Inter: Mourinho's Midfield Challenges Ahead of Clash
Real Madrid step into the Champions League under the lights of the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night with a problem they know all too well: the treatment room and the disciplinary list are busier than the dressing room.
They host Inter Milan at 9 p.m. CEST, still stinging from a 1-0 defeat to Real Betis, and José Mourinho must somehow piece together a midfield from what’s left.
Madrid Hit by Suspensions and Injuries
The numbers are brutal. Eight Real Madrid players are listed as unavailable for the opener.
Raúl Asencio, Endrick, Éder Militão, Thiago Pitarch and Rodrygo are all out injured. That alone would trouble most managers.
Then come the suspensions. Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva are banned for this first Champions League game. Camavinga and Güler are serving suspensions carried over from last season, while Silva’s absence stems from his red card in a previous clash with Real Madrid.
Those three bans cut straight through the heart of Mourinho’s midfield plan. The coach admitted Madrid have “known issues” going into this one, but insisted his side will still compete and play to win. He even spoke of “3, 4, or 5 options” to cover the absences in the middle of the pitch, but stopped there, refusing to reveal his hand.
One more question mark hovers over Aurélien Tchouaméni. The Frenchman has been recovering from a muscular problem and could return, but there is no guarantee he starts. Endrick, also nursing a muscular issue, has already missed the opening matches and remains doubtful.
For a Champions League opener against a side as structured as Inter, those are the kind of uncertainties that can shape a night.
Inter Travel Light – Mostly
On the other side, Cristian Chivu’s problems are far fewer.
UEFA list no confirmed absentees for Inter Milan. Only Federico Dimarco stands out as a concern after picking up a knee issue in Serie A action against Napoli. His status remains unclear ahead of the trip to Madrid, and his availability will dictate how Inter configure their left flank.
If Dimarco cannot go, Chivu will need to tweak a side that otherwise looks strong and settled.
The core is intact. Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolò Barella, Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martínez are all expected to feature, giving Inter a solid spine and, on paper, a clear selection advantage over a patched-up Madrid.
Predicted Lineups: Two Back Threes, Different Pressures
UEFA’s latest predicted lineups point to both coaches leaning on three-man defenses.
For Real Madrid, Mourinho is tipped to go with a 3-5-2. Thibaut Courtois is expected to start in goal, shielded by a back three of Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen.
Across midfield, the projection has Denzel Dumfries and Marc Cucurella operating as wing-backs, with Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham and Brahim Díaz in the central roles. Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé are expected to lead the line, an attacking pair capable of tilting any game regardless of who is missing behind them.
Inter’s predicted XI mirrors the shape. Josep Martínez is tipped to start in goal, behind a defensive trio of Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Alessandro Bastoni.
Denzel Dumfries, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Barella, Piotr Zieliński and Dimarco are listed across midfield, with Lautaro Martínez partnering Francesco Pio Esposito up front.
All of that, though, comes with an asterisk.
Tchouaméni’s final fitness test could force Mourinho into yet another rethink. Dimarco’s knee could force Chivu to redraw his left side. Both clubs will make their choices public around an hour before kick-off, when the official lineups drop.
By then, we will know whether this is a night defined by absences and improvisation for Madrid, or one where their stars up front drag them into a new European campaign on their own terms.
