Real Madrid's Cautious Approach to Tchouameni's Return

Real Madrid are in no mood to gamble with Aurelien Tchouameni. Not this season. Not after what happened last time his body was pushed to the limit.

AS report that the club, fully aligned with Jose Mourinho, have ruled out rushing the French midfielder back, even if it means starting the campaign without their best holding midfielder. The message from Valdebebas is simple: 100% or nothing.

Tchouameni’s problems trace back to the World Cup. He carried a knock into the final stretch of the tournament, missed two games, then came back for the semi-final. That decision aggravated the issue and left him unable to train at the same intensity as his teammates once he returned to Madrid.

The consequences have rolled into this summer. He has not featured in any of Real Madrid’s preseason friendlies, and Mourinho has drawn a clear line in the sand: there will be no early shortcuts, no half-fit cameos to plug gaps in August.

“He’s too important to be going in and out, in and out again,” Mourinho warned before the Malaga match, urging everyone to keep “emotions in check” over the midfielder’s return. He doesn’t want to launch the season with a recurring problem hanging over one of his pillars. He prefers to wait, even if that means several games without his specialist at the base of midfield.

The current plan reflects that caution. Inside the club, the expectation is that Tchouameni will only start to get minutes around the fifth La Liga matchday, when Real Madrid face Rayo Vallecano on the weekend of 14 September. Before that, the brakes stay on.

This is not about doubts over his quality. Quite the opposite. Mourinho sees Tchouameni as one of the foundations of his project, a structural piece rather than a rotation option. That is precisely why he refuses to force a comeback in the third league game just to patch up the midfield.

Tchouameni is the squad’s purest defensive midfielder, the one who screens the back line with the most authority. In a team where the rest of the midfielders tend to roam, create, and break lines, he is the anchor. And Real Madrid know what happens when that anchor is missing and the squad is stretched.

Last season, the club suffered a staggering 54 injuries. That figure set off alarm bells at Valdebebas and triggered a rethink in how recoveries are managed. One of the first measures was to tighten control over return timelines, cutting out unnecessary risks and rushed comebacks. Tchouameni has become the flagship example of that new approach.

His case also carries a personal dimension. After a shaky start to life in Madrid and some harsh whistles at the Bernabeu, Tchouameni turned his situation around last season. He rebuilt himself physically and mentally and earned the respect of the stands, becoming a player the fans genuinely appreciated.

Now, with question marks over Eduardo Camavinga’s consistency in the pure holding role, Tchouameni stands alone as the midfielder who can offer that profile week after week. His absence is felt, but his full recovery is seen as non-negotiable.

The backdrop is not entirely calm either. The Frenchman ended last season amid tension after his conflict with Federico Valverde. Both players insist the matter is resolved, yet doubts remain over how their relationship translates on the pitch. The fact they did not share further minutes together after the incident has not gone unnoticed.

All of this feeds into Mourinho’s stance. He wants Tchouameni back not just available, but strong, clear-headed, and ready to dominate the centre of the pitch again. No half measures. No patchwork solutions.

So Madrid wait. They know this season is the one in which Tchouameni must confirm his status as a pillar of the team. The question now is simple: once he’s finally unleashed, can he carry that weight for an entire campaign?
