Premier League Gameweek 5: Team News and Injury Updates
The final wave of Premier League Gameweek 5 press conferences rolled through on Friday, with 14 managers stepping up before the weekend. Among them: Mikel Arteta, Fabian Hürzeler and Marco Silva, all juggling injury lists, selection puzzles and early-season expectations.
Here’s where the weekend starts to take shape.
Arsenal: Arteta bullish on defensive options
Mikel Arteta cut a confident figure. Ben White, who looked to be struggling with a groin problem in the win over Sunderland, is expected to be ready.
“They are all good, we have another training session this afternoon, so we are really positive about everybody,” Arteta said when asked directly about White’s fitness.
The encouraging news didn’t stop there. Piero Hincapie, Cristhian Mosquera and Jurrien Timber all missed the midweek Carabao Cup win over Ipswich Town, but Arteta suggested that group is also on course to be involved. Timber’s absence in midweek, he reminded, was simply about managing minutes.
“Yeah, we have another session, they are all willing to be part of it, and we have another session to try to make sure that they are fit,” he added, confirming that Hincapie, Mosquera and Timber were included in that positive update.
One key absentee remains: William Saliba is still out with a back issue.
Beyond the medical bulletin, Arteta spent time praising Ezri Konsa, underlining just how quickly the defender has embedded himself in the squad.
“I heard some great things about Ezri before he joined and when you have him daily you just realise the magnitude of the player that we signed, not only the player but the person, the way he presents himself, the way he’s able to connect with people immediately,” Arteta said.
He highlighted Konsa’s relationship with Gabriel – “Big Gabi” – as a cornerstone of his defensive plans.
“When you see those two in the corridors talking the way they interact with each other, it seems like they’ve been here for a long, long, long time together, which is great because that’s a partnership that in my opinion is extremely important on the field and then his attributes, the quality that he delivers to the team is something that really makes us better.”
Arteta also addressed Eberechi Eze’s role on the left, stressing how natural that position is for him.
“He’s always played there in his career, that’s where all his biggest moments in his career and the highlights of his career have come and I think it’s a place that he feels very, very, very comfortable,” Arteta said, before hinting at the selection battle with Christos Tzolis.
“In form, in the opponent, in the relationship that we have within that unit, there are a lot of factors [in deciding who starts between Eze and Christos Tzolis on the left].”
The message from Arsenal? Almost everyone is ready. The choices now lie with Arteta.
Brighton: Azeez waits, youngsters step up
At Brighton, Fabian Hürzeler must wait a little longer to unleash Femi Azeez.
The summer signing is still sidelined with a hamstring issue and won’t make his debut before the international break.
“I think that the best thing for Femi is that he uses this [international break] to get back on his highest physical level and then get used to our style of play,” Hürzeler explained. “Then, we will try to work with him individually and hopefully integrate him back into the team, then definitely after the international break, he will be on a top level and we can use him in games.”
He’s not alone in the treatment room. Mats Wieffer (knee), Jack Hinshelwood, Yankuba Minteh (leg), Evan Ferguson (ankle), Kaoru Mitoma (hamstring), Stefanos Tzimas (knee) and Zadok Yohanna all remain unavailable.
The mood around the squad, though, is far from gloomy. Jaouen Hadjam is available again after a midweek knock, and Luka Vuskovic has been cleared following cramp in the 3-2 Carabao Cup win over Manchester United.
“He’s young, he will recover fast. He definitely will be an option for tomorrow,” Hürzeler said of Vuskovic.
Lewis Dunk, rested for that cup tie at Old Trafford, is also back in the frame, while Georginio Rutter has already made his return from injury with a substitute appearance in the Carabao Cup third round.
Brighton are still stretched, but with Dunk restored, Vuskovic ready and Rutter edging back, Hürzeler at least has a spine to lean on.
Fulham: Tete ruled out under concussion protocol
At Fulham, Marco Silva will have to do without Kenny Tete this weekend.
The right-back is sidelined after suffering a head injury and must now follow concussion protocol, ruling him out of Gameweek 5. Tom Cairney, dealing with a knee issue, also remains unavailable.
No drama, just disruption. And with the fixtures beginning to stack up and margins tightening already, how managers patch over these absences could shape more than just one weekend.
