Plymouth Argyle Secures Away Victory Against Doncaster Rovers
Plymouth Argyle finally found their away spark in Sky Bet League One, surging to a 3-2 win at winless Doncaster Rovers in a scoreline that flattered the hosts far more than the visitors.
Tom Cleverley’s side were sharper, quicker and far more ruthless in the key moments, pulling clear after the break and only briefly made to sweat by a stoppage-time consolation.
Evans sets the tone
Plymouth started cautiously but grew into the game, gradually pinning Doncaster back. The breakthrough arrived on 28 minutes, and it came from the man who looked most likely.
Oliver Irow’s strike forced Tommy Simkin into a save he couldn’t hold. The ball dropped kindly and Will Evans reacted first, turning it home to give Argyle a deserved lead.
Doncaster tried to respond before the interval. Alfie May, always the focal point, went close with an acrobatic bicycle kick that clipped a defender and looped over. It summed up their half: plenty of effort, not enough incision.
May hits back from the spot
The second half opened with a jolt. Six minutes after the restart, Doncaster were level.
Owen Bailey was bundled over in the box by Matty Sorinola, and the referee pointed straight to the spot. May stepped up in the 51st minute and this time there was no deflection to save Plymouth. He buried the penalty, dragging Rovers back into a contest that had threatened to slip away.
For a brief spell, the stadium stirred. Doncaster sensed a turning point. It didn’t last.
Pepple and Watts kill it
Argyle reset, tightened up and then struck with precision.
On 74 minutes, Bim Pepple restored their lead. Released into space, he showed composure and clarity, steadying himself before sliding a calm finish past Simkin. One chance, one goal. The air went out of Doncaster again.
The pressure finally told on the home defence. With seven minutes of normal time left, a mix-up at the back opened the door and substitute Caleb Watts walked straight through it. Presented with an empty net in the 83rd minute, he made no mistake, drilling in Plymouth’s third and effectively sealing their first away victory of the league campaign.
Late twist, but no rescue
Doncaster barely laid a glove on Argyle after falling 3-1 behind. Only in the dying seconds did they muster anything resembling a response.
Deep into added time, Bayley McCann swung in a free-kick and Sean Grehan met it with a thumping header, finally beating the Plymouth back line. It was a well-taken goal, but it arrived in the final minute of stoppage time, far too late to alter the outcome.
The whistle followed soon after. Plymouth walked away with three points and a statement away performance; Doncaster walked off still searching for their first league win, and now with an uncomfortable question hanging over them: how long can this run go on before the season slips away?
