Peter Schmeichel criticizes Manchester United defenders after Hull loss
Manchester United’s return to Premier League duty under Michael Carrick turned sour at Hull, and one of the club’s greatest icons did not hold back in his verdict.
Goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy earned Hull City a statement win over the Red Devils, and Peter Schmeichel laid the blame squarely on three United defenders: Patrick Dorgu, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw.
Dorgu and Heaven in the spotlight
Breaking down the first goal on Premier League Productions, Schmeichel went straight for Dorgu’s role at the near post from the corner that led to Ajayi’s strike.
“Observe Dorgu at the front post; he is not even watching the player taking the corner kick. At that precise moment, he loses focus and lacks the capability to block the first ball,” he said, highlighting the full-back’s lapse as the trigger for the chaos that followed.
The danger didn’t end there. At the far post, Heaven lost his duel with Oli McBurnie before Ajayi pounced. For Schmeichel, that was just as damning.
“And naturally, Ayden Heaven at the back post. He allows [Oli] McBurnie to get behind him. That is unacceptable. That is not how one should defend; one must be more assertive.”
One corner, two individual errors, and Hull had their breakthrough.
Shaw’s costly step
When Mendy struck, Schmeichel turned his attention to one of United’s most experienced figures. Luke Shaw, he argued, switched off at the decisive moment and turned a routine defensive line into a gift.
He accused the left-back of playing Hull’s attackers onside with a lazy step that betrayed a lack of concentration.
“It is the complete lack of concentration from Manchester United that disappoints me the most. I singled out Luke Shaw. Luke Shaw is two yards behind everyone else, putting everyone else onside. He should not be in that position. He was deceived by the dummy,” Schmeichel said.
“If he stayed up there, he would be either offside or it would have gone out for a goal kick. That’s a disappointment for me, that an experienced team like that makes mistakes like that.”
For a goalkeeper who built his career on commanding defences and demanding perfection, the sight of United’s back line unraveling in such simple fashion clearly cut deep.
Carrick and his players now have little time to dwell. Another newly promoted side, Ipswich Town, arrive at Old Trafford on Sunday, August 30. After Hull exposed those frailties so brutally, how United respond in front of their own fans will say plenty about where this team is really heading.
