Pedro and Reece James Absent from Chelsea Training Ahead of Brentford Match

Chelsea’s preparations for Friday night are suddenly wrapped in uncertainty after star forward Pedro, captain Reece James and midfielder Moises Caicedo all sat out the main portion of Tuesday’s training session.

Pedro absence raises alarm

Pedro’s no-show will sting most. The Brazilian has been Chelsea’s driving force this season, the one player who has consistently dragged them up the pitch and onto the scoresheet.

Three goals, three assists, five games. Those numbers tell part of the story. The rest is in the moments – none bigger than Saturday at Hull City, when he stepped up late to snatch a point with a crucial equaliser. He has been the difference between frustration and outright crisis more than once already this term.

So when Sky Sports journalist James Savundra reported that Pedro was missing from the open part of training, it sent a ripple of concern through the club. For a side still trying to find rhythm under Alonso, losing their form player – even briefly – is the last thing they need.

James missing after ever-present start

If Pedro’s absence was unexpected, Reece James’ was downright jarring.

The England international has quietly become the heartbeat of Chelsea’s midfield this season, repurposed into a central role and trusted to go the distance. He has completed the full 90 minutes in three of the club’s four league fixtures, offering control, bite and leadership in the middle of the pitch.

There was no obvious issue at Hull. James finished the draw looking comfortable, no limp, no grimace, no late knock that caught the eye. That is what makes his sudden removal from the main group such a serious concern inside the camp.

Chelsea are already walking a tightrope with injuries. Losing their captain, particularly one so central to Alonso’s tactical reshuffle, would force another rethink just as the team had begun to settle.

Caicedo’s slow road back

Caicedo’s situation is different. His absence has become a familiar, if frustrating, storyline.

The Ecuador international has yet to start a game this season, his campaign repeatedly stalled by a nagging physical problem. He missed the opening weekend against Fulham, then briefly appeared to be on the comeback trail with a 14-minute cameo in that wild 4-3 win over Brighton.

That short outing came at a cost. The same issue flared up again, ruling him out of subsequent clashes with Arsenal and Leeds and dragging his return further into the distance.

Alonso has been clear: there will be no shortcuts with the 24-year-old. Speaking last week about the possibility of Caicedo featuring this Friday, the Chelsea manager was blunt.

“Not yet, we’ll see for Brentford,” he said in his pre-match press conference, underlining that he would not be rushed into a decision. He stressed the need to protect the midfielder from further damage, repeating that this is “not a moment to take risks with him.”

For a club that invested so heavily in Caicedo to anchor their midfield, the caution speaks volumes about both the severity of the issue and the importance of getting him fully right, not just available.

A glimmer of good news

The training ground did offer Chelsea one welcome sight.

Summer signings Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson both trained fully with the group, a significant step as they edge closer to their first appearances for the club. Their integration has been a slow burn; on Tuesday it finally began to feel real.

For Alonso, that matters. If Pedro or James are forced to sit out, and with Caicedo still carefully managed, fresh options become vital. Palestra’s energy and Henderson’s experience could quickly shift from future assets to immediate necessities.

With Brentford looming and the fixture list beginning to tighten, Chelsea now wait for medical updates on three of their most important players. The next bulletin from the treatment room may shape not just Friday night, but the direction of their season.
