Newcastle United's Full-Back Dilemma Ahead of Liverpool Clash
Newcastle United are counting down to Liverpool with more questions than answers at full-back and precious little time to solve them.
Matthias Jaissle has less than a fortnight and only a handful of serious training sessions left before his first Premier League game in charge, after a summer chopped up by injuries and transfer noise. The squad still looks short in the wide defensive areas, and the latest medical updates have done nothing to ease the tension.
Hall back in the mix, but spotlight stays on his future
Lewis Hall briefly set alarm bells ringing when he left Newcastle’s training camp in Spain in early August. That exit was described as precautionary, and the left-back has now eased fears by returning to action, featuring in Wednesday’s friendly against Everton at Murrayfield.
The plan, as reported by The Athletic’s Chris Waugh before that game, was always for Hall to resume work on Tyneside and get minutes in the final stretch of pre-season, either in Edinburgh or in one of the two practice matches at St James’ Park next weekend. That schedule has broadly held.
So Hall should be available when Liverpool arrive on August 23. The caveat? Only if he is still a Newcastle player by then. His future remains a live topic in the background of Jaissle’s preparations, even as the head coach leans on him to shore up a thin position.
Miley boost in midfield
There is at least one clear positive. Lewis Miley, who has been recovering from a broken leg, is expected to be fit for the season opener against Liverpool.
Craig Hope and Simon Jones of the Daily Mail report that Newcastle anticipate the young midfielder being available for the visit of the Reds. Given the disruption elsewhere, having Miley back in contention offers Jaissle another trusted option in the middle of the pitch as he tries to knit together a coherent XI for opening day.
Livramento ruled out of Liverpool clash
The right side is a different story.
Tino Livramento will not make it in time for Liverpool. The 23-year-old has been out since the calf injury that forced him to withdraw from England’s World Cup squad, and his recovery remains on a separate track to the rest of the group.
Hope and Jones report that the England defender is currently in the United States, continuing his rehabilitation away from Newcastle’s training base. The club’s expectation, according to their report, is that he could return on the second weekend of the campaign, when Newcastle travel to Tottenham on MD 2, if his recovery stays on schedule.
That timeline rules him out of the opener. It also leaves Jaissle with a headache at right-back at the very moment he needs clarity and rhythm.
Transfer urgency grows
Newcastle were already in the market for full-backs before these latest updates. Now the need is pressing.
With Livramento sidelined and Hall only recently back from a precautionary withdrawal, Jaissle is preparing to face Liverpool with one senior full-back still building up his workload and the other definitely missing. The margin for error is thin. Any further setback would leave the back line badly exposed.
Recruitment plans were designed to strengthen depth and raise the level in those positions. This injury picture turns that desire into something closer to necessity as the transfer window ticks towards its close.
For now, the likely scenario is stark: Newcastle will walk out against Liverpool without Livramento, relying on Hall to stay fit and absorb as many minutes as his legs – and his future – will allow. With Tottenham looming on matchday two and the market still open, the next couple of weeks could shape not just Jaissle’s first month in charge, but the defensive balance of Newcastle’s entire season.
