Newcastle Concerned Over Anthony Elanga's Injury After Sweden Duty Withdrawal

Newcastle United face an untimely injury headache after Anthony Elanga missed the 4-1 defeat at Leeds United and was then ruled out of Sweden’s upcoming Nations League fixtures.

Matthias Jaissle has lost one of his most dangerous forwards just as the season hits its first real pause. Elanga, a nailed-on starter since opening day, now heads for further scans instead of international duty.

Sweden confirm Elanga blow

The Swedish FA confirmed the 22-year-old will play no part in their Nations League games against Romania and Poland.

In a statement, they outlined a growing injury list, naming Elanga among the absentees.

“A number of names are missing and several are due to injuries,” the statement read. “Isak Hien, who was injured during the World Cup, is still not available. Anthony Elanga has suffered an injury in the past week and will therefore miss the meeting.”

The winger is scheduled for another MRI next week as Newcastle try to understand the full extent of the problem.

Newcastle’s early-season spark sidelined

The timing could hardly be worse. Elanga will miss Newcastle’s home game against Hull City on Saturday and is already guaranteed to sit out at least four matches once Sweden’s two internationals are included.

The real worry inside the club is that the layoff may stretch well beyond that initial spell. If the MRI confirms a significant issue, Newcastle lose not just a body, but one of their form players.

Elanga started the campaign on fire, scoring in each of Newcastle’s opening two Premier League games against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. His pace and direct running from the right have been central to Jaissle’s attacking plan. Then came the setback that ruled him out of the trip to Elland Road.
