Courtois vital, but not alone
In the middle of the storm stood Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian produced a string of important saves to keep Madrid ahead, but Mourinho resisted the easy narrative that the goalkeeper had single-handedly dragged them over the line.
“Courtois made many saves, but how many goals did we waste on the counter-attacks? It was a wonderful match,” he said, keen to frame the victory as a wild, two-way spectacle rather than a backs-to-the-wall heist.
He also moved quickly to highlight the unseen work behind Valverde’s goal, arguing that Madrid’s pressing and collective aggression had forced the mistakes that led to their breakthroughs. Mourinho’s message for Vinicius
The sharpest part of his post-match debrief, though, was reserved for Vinicius.
The forward, still searching for his sharpest form, was targeted by some home supporters during the game. Mourinho did not hide from the reality that Vinicius is below his peak, but he drew a firm line on how that should be treated.
“He has not yet reached his full readiness, and he is not yet the Vinicius we know, but he works a lot, and whoever works and gives everything he has deserves respect,” Mourinho said.
