Is Moises Caicedo Ready for Chelsea vs Brighton?
Chelsea face Brighton on Sunday with one question towering over the rest: is Moises Caicedo ready?
Xabi Alonso wants him on the pitch at Stamford Bridge. The midfielder, injured in training last week, has already missed wins over Fulham and Luton Town and remains under assessment heading into the weekend.
“He is hopefully training [on Friday]. We are hopeful he can be involved. We are still checking; no decision made,” Alonso said. That line tells the story. Optimism, yes. Certainty, no.
Caicedo call will define Chelsea’s midfield
With Caicedo, Chelsea gain control, aggression and structure in the middle of the pitch. Without him, they still have bodies, but not the same authority.
Reece James, Valentin Barco and Romeo Lavia are all available and give Alonso different shapes to work with. Enzo Fernandez is the other big variable. He was expected to be involved against Luton, then left out, with interest from Manchester City swirling around him. For now, the noise is secondary. The key issue is simple: is he fit, and does Alonso pick him?
Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra remain sidelined, trimming the options. That is why Caicedo’s status carries so much weight. Chelsea can survive without him in spells. They look a different, more complete side when he anchors the midfield.
Martinez arrival sharpens goalkeeper debate
In goal, the picture is becoming clearer by the week. Robert Sanchez appears to be drifting out of the frame after Chelsea agreed a £7.5million deal with Aston Villa for Emiliano Martinez.
Mike Penders started and kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 win over Luton, while Sanchez watched from the bench. Alonso has already decided who starts against Brighton but is keeping that choice to himself. The battle for the No 1 shirt has begun in earnest.
At the back, there is a significant boost. Wesley Fofana is back from suspension and in line for his first competitive appearance of the season. Young defender Josh Acheampong is also expected to be in the squad, adding fresh legs and energy to the defensive pool.
Levi Colwill and Geovany Quenda missed the Luton game, but Alonso played down any serious concern. “Our plan is that they are training [Friday] preparing for Sunday. With Levi, we know three games in a week after the injury, missing a period, he needs to take the right steps. We don’t want to push him too much. So he feels comfortable,” he explained.
Palmer to lead evolving front line
Up front, Cole Palmer remains central to the plan. He played the full 90 minutes on Thursday and there is no suggestion he will be rested. Expect him to start again, with Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro alongside him as Chelsea continue to shape a new-look attack.
The predicted XI, in a 3-4-2-1, looks like this: Penders; Fofana, Lacroix, Acheampong; Gusto, Caicedo, James, Chavarria; Palmer, Rogers; Joao Pedro.
Caicedo and Fernandez are the major doubts. Palestra and Henderson are out. Kick-off is 2pm BST on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Stamford Bridge.
For Chelsea, the brief is brutally clear: get Caicedo on the pitch, settle the goalkeeper hierarchy, and own the midfield. The rest of their afternoon may depend on it.
