Moisés Caicedo Left Out for Chelsea vs Arsenal Clash
Moisés Caicedo’s stop-start beginning to the season took another twist on Sunday, as the Chelsea midfielder was left out of the squad entirely for the Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sept. 6.
The Ecuador international had only just worked his way back from injury, making his absence from such a marquee fixture a significant setback for Xabi Alonso’s side.
Caicedo was already a surprise omission from Chelsea’s opening league game against Fulham, with Alonso revealing then that the 22-year-old had suffered what he called a “minor setback.” That issue kept him out of the midweek Carabao Cup win over Luton Town, raising early questions about his fitness rhythm.
He did return to action against Brighton last weekend, but only briefly. Introduced as a second-half substitute, Caicedo lasted just 14 minutes before he had to come off, cutting short what was supposed to be a gentle reintroduction. Alonso later admitted the problem “wasn’t something new,” hinting at an issue that has lingered longer than Chelsea would like.
The build-up to the Arsenal showdown brought a glimmer of optimism. Caicedo trained and pushed to be involved, and Alonso suggested the midfielder had gone close to making the cut. Yet when the teams were announced, his name was nowhere to be seen.
“He was close. But there is no point in taking a risk at this moment. We need to be cautious,” Alonso told Sky Sports before kick-off, underlining Chelsea’s decision to protect a key asset rather than gamble on his fitness in a high-intensity derby.
For a Chelsea side trying to build fluency under a new manager, losing their high-energy midfield anchor for a statement game against Arsenal is more than an inconvenience. It stretches options in the center of the pitch and delays the moment when Caicedo can finally settle into a consistent role.
Chelsea will hope “close” this weekend turns into “available” soon. Their season may depend on it.
