Kylian Mbappe Surpasses Ronaldo’s World Cup Record with Two Goals in France's Dominant Win Over Sweden
Kylian Mbappe has officially surpassed Brazilian icon Ronaldo in World Cup history after delivering an impressive performance during France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden in the last 32 stage. The Real Madrid forward scored twice, securing France’s spot in the round of 16 with authority.
Mbappe Breaks Knockout Stage Scoring Record
The historic moment came just before halftime. After a quick exchange with Ousmane Dembele, Mbappe outpaced Sweden’s Viktor Gyokeres and fired a precise shot past goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom. That goal marked Mbappe’s ninth in World Cup knockout rounds, breaking the record previously held by Brazilian legends Leonidas and Ronaldo.
“I’m very aware of who I am, how I play, what I shall do, but it’s not just about me,” Mbappe said. “The entire team knows what needs to be done. This is a new phase of the tournament. We played well, but we were cautious. We could have started stronger.”
Closing in on Lionel Messi’s Golden Boot Record
Mbappe wasn’t done. Following Bradley Barcola’s early second-half goal that doubled France’s lead, Mbappe struck again in the 74th minute. Receiving a perfect pass from Michael Olise, he calmly finished into the far corner, sealing the victory.
This goal was his sixth of the 2026 World Cup, tying him with Argentine legend Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot lead. More importantly, Mbappe’s total World Cup tally now stands at 18 goals, just one shy of Messi’s all-time record of 19.
Emotional Moment with Coach Didier Deschamps
Right after scoring, Mbappe ran to the sideline to celebrate with head coach Didier Deschamps. This touching scene came as Deschamps returned to coaching duties after missing France’s final group match against Norway due to his mother’s funeral.
Mbappe shared, “He knows he will never be alone with us and we will support him.” Deschamps responded, “We’re on a mission – and so am I with them.”
Next Challenge: Paraguay in Round of 16
The 3-0 win over Sweden was France’s largest knockout-stage victory since their 1998 World Cup final triumph over Brazil. Now, they prepare for a critical Round of 16 clash against Paraguay in Philadelphia on July 4. With Mbappe in top form and the team performing smoothly, Les Bleus appear to be the favorites as the tournament moves forward.
